Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent times, there is an ongoing debate that government should take action to transfer animals to the forests which will eventually trigger the closure of zoos. I agree to a large extent with this belief and I shall provide my reasoning along with examples before presenting a conclusion.

First and foremast, the animals have numerous fundamental rights which should be honored. They are living creatures like humans and should be treated with dignity and honor. Naturally, they belong to forests to maintain an environmental ecosystem. Since the beginning of world, the animals have always stayed in their natural home. The humans seized them from forests against their will and located them to zoos for entertainment and pleasure. For instance, there is a large proportion of exotic animals in 360 Zoo, Multan which are kept under intense heat.

Furthermore, the lifespan of animals is shortened when they don't get the necessary food and personal care in zoos. The zoo employees don't treat them with respect and consider them as their slaves which triggers various mental diseases among them. The zoo visitors tease them for fun and entertainment. For example, in Pakistan, it is a common practice to throw stones at monkeys which is the prevalent reason of their injuries. Moreover, in small zoos, animals don't get the medical treatment which has been the cause of deaths for many decades.

In spite of cruel treatment with animals, some people argue that due to ongoing deforestation in major countries, the animals can't survive in the wild. Therefore, we should locate them to zoos for their own safety and security. Media has also reported that certain animals have ceased to exist because they could not get the food and shelter at the right moment.

It can be concluded that, animals are wild in their nature and should be provided complete freedom to live in their natural home. The humans should not utilize their power and knowledge to separate them from their families. Since protecting animals is a great deed, they can be located to zoos or animal parks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the conclusion is contradictory; after arguing for the closure of zoos, the final sentence suggests that animals 'can be located to zoos or animal parks,' which undermines the overall argument. While the ideas are relevant, the development is somewhat repetitive, and the final paragraph fails to reinforce the initial stance effectively. To reach a higher band, ensure that the conclusion aligns perfectly with the arguments presented in the body paragraphs and avoid self-contradiction.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'First and foremast,' 'Furthermore,' and 'In spite of' are used to link ideas. However, the progression of ideas is occasionally hindered by the contradictory conclusion. Additionally, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The use of referencing is generally clear, though the flow between the third and fourth paragraphs could be smoother to better highlight the contrast between the arguments.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their opinions clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'fundamental rights,' 'exotic animals,' and 'prevalent reason.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'located them to zoos' (should be 'relocated them to zoos') and 'ceased to exist' (which is slightly misused in this context). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but more precise academic vocabulary would enhance the quality of the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'the animals have numerous fundamental rights which should be honored' (a bit simplistic) and 'Since the beginning of world' (missing article 'the'). There are also issues with preposition usage and article consistency. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage would be beneficial.
