Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that we do not need to keep animals in zoos anymore, so zoos should be closed. I strongly disagree with this opinion because giving animals freedom can endanger humans and harm animals' habitat. It also helps scientists perform wildlife research on different species.

Firstly, zoos help to protect humans from dangerous animals. Many dangerous animals, such as lions, tigers, crocodiles, and venomous snakes, when allowed to roam in the open world, might kill human beings. Recently, many crocodiles came out of the river in one of the states in India due to heavy floods, which killed many children and women. Secondly, zoos help protect the endangered species from extinction. In the 19th century, many of the animal species became extinct because they were killed by other animals and by humans. Humans kill animals to get their body parts, such as elephant tusks, the skin of the crocodile, and so on. They sell this to vendors to get sufficient profits.

Additionally, zoos encourage many scientists to carry out wildlife research. If animals cannot be observed and studied, this research cannot be carried out. For example, Dr. Harry Parker and other researchers study animals in detail to learn about their behavior and reproduction. Furthermore, animals can live longer in zoos than in forests. Several animals die due to various diseases, but in zoos, doctors cure the disease by providing medicines to them. In addition, animals living in forests sometimes die due to hunger, and this situation is not created in zoos.

In conclusion, although closing zoos might have certain benefits, I strongly believe that zoos should exist to provide a better life for animals and protect humans from venomous species. It also helps to discover more about their behavior and reproduction.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have clearly stated your position and maintained it throughout the essay. You address the prompt by providing reasons for keeping zoos, such as human safety, conservation, and scientific research. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat uneven. For instance, the argument regarding human safety is supported by a specific example, but the claim that animals live longer in zoos is a broad generalization that lacks nuance. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are balanced and fully explored, perhaps by acknowledging the counter-argument more deeply before refuting it. Overall, the response is relevant and addresses all parts of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Additionally', and 'Furthermore' to signal the progression of your ideas. While the paragraphing is appropriate, some of the transitions feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, though the link between the paragraph about scientific research and the subsequent point about animal longevity could be smoother. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. You use topic-specific terms like 'endangered species', 'extinction', and 'reproduction' appropriately. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'roam in the open world' (which sounds slightly unnatural) and 'sufficient profits' (which is a bit vague). You attempt to use some less common vocabulary, but there is room for more sophisticated collocations to elevate the tone. The spelling is accurate throughout, and your vocabulary is adequate to express your arguments without causing any confusion for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, which allows for easy communication. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'many of the animal species became extinct' (the 'the' is unnecessary here) and 'this situation is not created in zoos' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). Your control of punctuation is generally good. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice constructions, with greater precision to demonstrate a higher level of grammatical flexibility.
