Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is no need to have wildlife kept in zoos, so all animals reserves should be locked down. In my opinion I strongly disagree with this statement. I stand on the belief that Zoos should be kept open and running because of its numerous advantages to the society.

Firstly, The definition of zoo. A Zoo is a place or a constrained environment that houses animals especially wildlife., and in my opinion should not be closed cause it’s numerous advantages. Being one, it’s a good source for leisure activity. During the holidays when students vacate from schools and there parents are seeking for a place to take there kids to pass time and for there kids to have fun rather than keeping them idle at home. I can remember vividly during my basic education, during August break, every weekend my grand parents would always take me to the zoo to have fun in a zoo, this is because inside the zoo had a recreational amusement park where kids play and I also loved spending time with Bobby the panda, so that memory is stuck with me till date.

Secondly, the reason why zoos shouldn’t be locked down, is zoo’s educates individuals about the lifestyles of animals, including sampling of drugs used to take care of these different species. If not for the help of these confiscated enclosures, majority of humans would live in assumptions of the behaviors of animals and the type of drug animals react to, but with the help of the enclosed habitat, experiments can be carried on animals to determine the exact drug for there illness or injury and as well study the characteristics of these animals. I remember specifically, I didn’t know that the animal called skunk smells so terrible till I came in close contact with it at a zoo. It was then that I noticed that the animal releases a toxic spray from the anal sphincter, which its stench stays with you for a while before subsiding.

However, individuals might have contrast opinion regarding the safekeeping of zoos, suggesting that the land which zoos occupy could be used for Structural development to create Jobs opportunities for individuals and so on, but neither the less I stand on the opinion that zoos should be safeguarded for the the purpose of leisure, education and scientific research and advancement.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position against closing zoos. You provide two main supporting arguments: leisure and education/research. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat uneven. The section on scientific research is slightly confusing, as it conflates 'sampling of drugs' with general animal study, and the anecdote about the skunk, while personal, is less relevant to the broader argument of scientific advancement. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is directly linked to the main argument with more sophisticated reasoning rather than relying on personal anecdotes.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'However' to signal transitions. However, the referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the phrase 'Being one, it’s a good source for leisure activity', where the pronoun 'one' does not clearly refer back to the previous sentence. Additionally, some sentences are overly long and fragmented, which occasionally disrupts the flow of the argument. Improving the variety and precision of your linking words would enhance the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'constrained environment', 'recreational', and 'scientific research'. However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'locked down' (usually used for buildings or cities, not institutions like zoos), 'sampling of drugs', and 'live in assumptions'. There are also minor errors in word form, such as 'zoo’s educates' instead of 'zoos educate'. To improve, focus on using vocabulary in more natural contexts and proofreading for basic word-form errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('zoo’s educates'), pronoun usage ('there parents' instead of 'their parents'), and punctuation (missing spaces after commas and periods). Some sentences are run-on or lack necessary articles. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to lower the score. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common homophone errors (there/their/they're) will significantly improve your accuracy.
