IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

I disagree with the idea that zoos should be closed. Although keeping animals in captivity can sometimes lead to raise in ethical concerns, well-managed zoos can play an important role in protecting wildlife, educating people and supporting conservation programmes.

One major reason why zoos are still necessary is that they can help protect endangered species. Many animals are threatened by habibat destruction, illegal haunting and change in climate. Zoos who are properly managed provides safe environment where they can reproduce under professional supervision. Some conservation programmes have successfully increased the number of endangered species who are at the verge of extintion. Therefore, closing the zoos can remove the important method of protecting some species.

Another major reason is that they provide education to students and wildlife experts who wants to gain knowledge. Zoos helps childern to observe the behaviour of wild animals closely. It develops intrest in their minds and makes them curious for the same. For example, a child who showed intrest in preserving wildlife might make positive changes to protect and save them.

However, I also believe that animals should not be kept in small and locked enclosures just for the sake of entertainment. Responsible zoos have constant eye on every animal in their zoo and ensures their protection.

In conclusion, I personally believe that a well-managed zoo who works for the benefit of the animals should be funded and more adequate facilities should be provided. They feed animals as they are well aware of their nutrition and diet. Whereas, the zoos which do not give proper attention and care to animals should be closed strictly.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position of disagreement. The ideas regarding conservation and education are relevant and supported with examples, such as the mention of endangered species and the educational benefits for children. However, the development is somewhat uneven; the argument could be strengthened by providing more specific examples of successful conservation programs or more nuanced discussion on the ethical concerns mentioned in the introduction. The conclusion introduces a slight shift in focus by suggesting that only poorly managed zoos should be closed, which is a reasonable extension of the argument but could have been integrated more smoothly into the body paragraphs to ensure a more cohesive line of reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, such as protection of species or education. Cohesive devices like 'Although', 'One major reason', 'Another major reason', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, there are minor issues with referencing and flow; for instance, the use of 'who' for animals ('Zoos who are properly managed') is grammatically incorrect and disrupts the flow. Additionally, the transition between the final body paragraph and the conclusion could be more fluid to better connect the argument about animal welfare to the final verdict.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at topic-specific language such as 'endangered species', 'habitat destruction', and 'conservation programmes'. However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and spelling mistakes that detract from the quality, such as 'raise in ethical concerns' (rise), 'habibat' (habitat), 'haunting' (hunting), and 'extintion' (extinction). The use of 'who' instead of 'which' or 'that' when referring to animals is a recurring error that limits the precision of the writing. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on accurate collocations and proofreading for spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the student attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and relative pronouns. Examples include 'Zoos who are properly managed provides' (should be 'Zoos which are properly managed provide') and 'wildlife experts who wants' (should be 'who want'). There are also issues with article usage and pluralization, such as 'change in climate' (climate change) and 'childern' (children). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score in this category.
