IELTS Writing Task 2 question
We no longer need to have animals kept in zoos, so zoos should be closed.
Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The zoos should be sealed and no longer required to keep animals. I stand to disagree with this point, and I would suggest a few reasons why.
A zoo is a place where different kinds of animals are kept and displayed for people to see. Zoos take proper care of the animals and ensure that they are healthy. Some of my reasons are as follows: a zoo is a source of entertainment. Students can learn about different kinds of animals by visiting zoos, and this aids them in their research assignment. They will be able to gain knowledge.
Another reason is that the zoo helps to protect endangered species from predators and human activities. The zoo will provide adequate facilities for the animals and will provide them with the care they need to survive. Kids do find visiting the zoo an adventure because they can see all the big and small animals and will be able to discuss them with their friends and teachers.
I do suggest that shutting down the zoos won't be a good idea because it is the heart of the community and it is where revenue is generated to help the community. For example, I know a community that closed down its zoo and began to find it difficult to solve some of their problems because that zoo was where they were able to generate revenue to solve minor issues in their town. And the number of tourists began to decrease because most of the tourists came to visit the zoo.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a disagreement with the idea of closing zoos. You provide relevant arguments, such as the educational value of zoos, their role in conservation, and their economic impact on communities. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about conservation is mentioned but not fully explained with specific examples of how zoos protect endangered species. The argument regarding revenue is more developed, but the overall depth of the essay remains at a basic level. To improve, ensure each body paragraph provides a more detailed explanation or a concrete example to support your claims.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on a specific theme (education, conservation, and economics). There is a clear progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'Another reason is that' and 'I do suggest that' are used to transition between points, but the flow could be improved with more varied linking words and better referencing. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be strengthened to ensure a smoother transition between sentences.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'endangered species,' 'predators,' and 'revenue.' However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simple, repetitive phrasing (e.g., 'different kinds of animals,' 'big and small animals'). To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more precise and sophisticated vocabulary, such as 'biodiversity,' 'financial sustainability,' or 'educational resource,' rather than relying on basic descriptive terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'The zoos should be sealed' (which is slightly unnatural in this context) and 'I do suggest that shutting down the zoos won't be a good idea.' Punctuation is generally correct, but the sentence variety is somewhat limited. To improve, try to incorporate a wider range of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, while ensuring that your control over these structures remains accurate.
