Student answer (Band 6.0)

People have different views about whether the zoos should be kept open or closed. While i acknowledge that closing the zoos may be beneficial for some placed but i believe zoos should be kept open because they can contribute to wildlife conservation and public education.

On the one hand, proponents of closing zoo argue that animals should be kept free. This is mainly because keeping them inside a cage is like prison to them. Animals were meant to roam freely but the humans took that freedom from the animals. For example, animals like elephants, Tigers need bigger habitat to survive. Being closed in a small area might give them abnormal behaviour and stress.

On the other hand people who advocate zoos should continue to operate. This is primarily because many of the zoos protect endangered species of animals by unwanted infections or poachers. They help the animals breed to grow their population, giving them adequate diet for their nutrition and protecting them from other animals who might kill them.Zoo is the perfect place for humans where they can see wild animals and know about there past history. For example, Zoos can help maintaining an endangered specie safe by breeding them , and giving good diet to conserve wildlife and it can be useful for public education as well.

In conclusion, i acknowledge that closing zoos maybe useful in some scenarios as animals might show abnormal behaviour because they are closed in the cage but i believe by keeping the zoos open we can protect the wildlife animals by looking after them, protecting them from infections, poachers and giving them essentials nutrients to keep them safe and healthy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You have provided relevant arguments for both sides of the issue, such as animal welfare concerns versus conservation and education. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about 'public education' is mentioned but not fully explained or exemplified. To reach a higher band, ensure that each main idea is supported by a specific, well-developed example rather than just listing benefits. Overall, the response is relevant and the position is consistent.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand' and 'In conclusion' to signal the structure. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where referencing is slightly unclear, such as the transition between the benefits of breeding and the mention of public education. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'endangered species', 'conservation', and 'poachers'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'placed' instead of 'places', 'specie' (which should be 'species' in both singular and plural), and 'past history' (which is redundant). Expanding your range of vocabulary and focusing on precise collocations would help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the zoos'), subject-verb agreement, and punctuation. For example, 'proponents of closing zoo' should be 'closing zoos', and 'there past history' should be 'their past history'. Additionally, the use of 'i' instead of 'I' is a recurring error. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy will be beneficial.
