Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt but fails to take a clear, consistent position. The introduction mentions a 'win-win' situation, and the conclusion remains neutral, stating 'it depends on the situation.' IELTS Task 2 requires a clear stance throughout the essay. While some ideas are relevant, such as economic benefits and animal welfare, they are under-developed and lack specific examples or logical depth. The arguments are presented as a list rather than a cohesive discussion, and the failure to commit to an opinion significantly limits the development of the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is weak. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often mechanical or misused, such as 'Contrast,' which should be 'In contrast.' Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the transition between ideas feels disjointed. For example, the jump from economic benefits to smartphone addiction lacks a logical bridge. While the paragraphing is present, the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks the necessary flow to guide the reader effectively through the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. Basic terms like 'good,' 'open,' and 'animals' are used frequently. There are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'keep opens the zoos' instead of 'keeping zoos open' and 'mental pressure' instead of 'psychological distress.' The range is sufficient to communicate basic ideas, but it lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. The student struggles with idiomatic phrasing and academic tone, relying on simple, everyday language throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but errors are frequent and sometimes impede clarity. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement ('animals lost there freedom'), article usage, and tense consistency. For instance, 'mostly ready to attack' and 'it will make lazy' are grammatically incomplete or incorrect. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and punctuation prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Complex structures are attempted but are often faulty.
