Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued that we no longer need to keep the animals in the zoos, so zoos should be closed.

I personally agree that zoos should be closed, because animals are used to live in their natural habitats and wild animals can not be kept in cages as special safety and their care is needed.

Most of the animals in the zoos are brought from different jungles and forests around the world, as every specie is not present everywhere. It requires a huge budget on their transportation. They should be transported with extensive care. Moreover as we kept on bringing the wildlife to the zoos, we will destroy their natural life cycle. In addition, animals can not survive in the artificial environment provided by the zoo management. For instance penguins and polar bears only lives in cold regions.Despite of the best arrangements, the climate has it's own impact as well. Moreover Lions and tigers are not comfortable in the cages.

Feeding large number of herbivores and carnivores requires intensive farming, fishing and transport networks. Gallons of water is wasted to keep fishes in the aquarium, putting pressure on local supplies. Besides this, government bodies do not have enough resources to handle the animal waste in the urban areas. It requires strict sewage control to prevent soil and water pollution. Instead of controlling all these parameters, funds should be utilized to preserve the natural habitats.

I strongly agree that, animals should be sent back to the zoos, where they live naturally, On the other expenditure and resources should be utilized on wildlife.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout, agreeing that zoos should be closed. Main ideas regarding animal welfare, natural habitats, and the resources required to maintain zoos are introduced and supported with examples, such as penguins and polar bears needing cold regions. However, the development of some ideas lacks depth, and there is a contradictory slip in the final paragraph where the student writes 'animals should be sent back to the zoos' instead of their natural habitats. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fitting the criteria for Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement and is divided into appropriate paragraphs representing an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, transitional phrases like 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'Besides this' are overused and create a somewhat repetitive structure. Referencing is also slightly unclear in places, and the logical progression between sentences occasionally falters. These features align with the Band 6 descriptor.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, incorporating topic-specific terms such as 'natural habitats', 'wildlife', 'herbivores', and 'carnivores'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'animals are used to live' (instead of 'used to living'), 'every specie is not present' (incorrect plural form 'species'), and the critical slip in the conclusion ('sent back to the zoos' where 'wild' was clearly intended). Spelling and word formation errors place this firmly at Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional ideas. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense issues ('lives' instead of 'live'), missing articles ('a huge budget', 'the climate has it\'s own impact'), and preposition errors ('in the zoos' versus 'to the zoos'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur with enough frequency to prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. The grammar is characteristic of Band 5.5.
