Student answer (Band 6.0)

People do not have needs to continue keeping animals in zoos, therefore they demand that zoos be closed. In my opinion, I do not agree that there is no need to house animals in zoos, which then will lead to the termination of zoos. But, I support the need to expand wildlife conservation.

Foremost, all life forms on earth really matters a lot, and need to be safeguarded no matter the species. Many animals are becoming extinct, and hence the need to preserve these wild life. The only place that the animals can be kept to ensure that they are protected from dying off from the surface of the earth is to establish places like zoo. Zoo is one structure that has housed different wild animals which we cannot see in any forest of the world. It is a means to conserve animals, and save them the cost of entirely being wiped out from earth. Moreover, many of these animals can be used for research and studies.

Secondly, it is also noteworthy that zoo serves as a place for tourism in many countries. People visit this place to have themselves entertained, and learn more about these creatures. Peradventure, if zoos are closed, and these animals cannot be found anywhere else, how can people get to learn about them. I have heard stories from my childhood how the creature, Dinosaur was at the verge of extinction. If places like zoo was not put in place, these animals would have been no where to be found by now, and we will barely know anything about them. Apart from educational purposes, and entertainment, there are so many reasons that animals should be harbored in zoos rather than closing it entirely.

In conclusion, we do not probably need to close the zoos as people are in demand for it. However, we need to come together as one voice, and put up ideas that can lead to the expansion of zoos to accommodate more wildlife.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear position ('I do not agree that there is no need to house animals in zoos') and supporting it throughout the essay. Main ideas, such as wildlife conservation, research, and educational tourism, are introduced and extended, although some supporting arguments lean towards generalisation, such as claiming that dinosaurs were saved by zoos (which is historically inaccurate, as dinosaurs became extinct millions of years before modern zoos existed). Nevertheless, the position is maintained consistently and the main requirements of the prompt are appropriately met, corresponding to a Band 6.5 or solid Band 6 descriptor level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs signaled by transitional markers ('Foremost', 'Secondly', 'In conclusion'), and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. However, some cohesive devices feel slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'Peradventure, if zoos are closed'. Referencing is generally clear, but logical progression occasionally falters due to abrupt transitions between sentences, such as the sudden historical reference to dinosaurs. Overall, the organisational structure is logical and easy to follow, fitting the Band 6 criteria well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'safeguarded', 'extinct', 'conservation', and 'harbored'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward collocations throughout the text, such as 'People do not have needs to continue keeping animals in zoos', 'these wild life' (uncountable noun treated as plural), and 'save them the cost of entirely being wiped out'. Word formation issues also occur, such as 'in demand for it'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching Band 7.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures (e.g., 'If places like zoo was not put in place...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors and lapses in agreement, such as 'all life forms on earth really matters' (subject-verb agreement), 'if zoo was' (singular/plural mismatch with 'places'), and 'no where' (spelling/word division). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but structural inaccuracies in complex sentences occur regularly. These errors rarely impede overall comprehension, reflecting the characteristics of Band 6.
