Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt regarding whether zoos should be closed, taking a clear stance that zoos remain necessary for animal protection and conservation, provided they are improved. The writer puts forward relevant ideas, such as the dangers of releasing animals into the wild due to hunting and global warming, as well as acknowledging counter-arguments regarding small cages. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited and lacks extension, resulting in a somewhat brief and generalized treatment of the topic. For instance, the discussion on animal welfare issues in cages is introduced but not fully explored. Nevertheless, all parts of the task are addressed, earning a Band 6.0 under the task achievement descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays an overall coherent arrangement with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is attempted, though some formatting irregularities exist in the student's layout. Cohesive devices are used to link ideas, such as 'To begins with', 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and transitions are at times faulty or mechanical, and mechanical errors in punctuation and spacing detract from the smooth flow of the text. The progression of ideas is occasionally disrupted by awkward sentence boundaries and phrasing, placing this firmly at Band 5.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with attempts to incorporate less common items such as 'extinction', 'global warming', and 'sanctuary'. However, there is a high frequency of spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'permananetly', 'disapperence', 'Thay', 'dangeours', 'facilties', 'routiens', 'live' instead of 'lives', 'athurities', and 'stirct'. These errors occasionally impede communication and show limited control over word formation and collocation, reflecting the characteristics of a Band 5.0 performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some attempt at subordination and relative clauses. However, grammatical accuracy is notably weak, with frequent errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and articles (e.g., 'zoo is only the one place which can kept them save', 'some creatures are become extinct', 'some time of zoo's put animals', 'wild safari parks and sanctuary should be make properly'). These recurring errors cause difficulty for the reader and mean that error-free sentences are infrequent, aligning with the Band 5.0 descriptors.
