Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people believe that animals should be made free from the cages of zoos, and those zoos should be shut down permanently. I strongly disagree with this statement because zoos provide economic benefits and also help in conservation of animals.

Many zoos around the world acts as centre for economic activites. This is because proper operation and maintainance of such places requires large human manpower, and consequently it provides employment opportuinites for a large number of people. Thus, zoos are major source of income for many people, whose closure can lead them to joblessness and financial difficulties. For instance, a zoo can provide employment to same number of people Furthermore, the government can benefit from these places by collecting fees and taxes, which can contribute to national funds, and these funds can be used in development of other sectors in the country.

In addition to economy, zoos can acts as conservation areas for endangered species. Owing to poaching and climate change, several anmials are in verge of extinction. Therefore, zoos can be suitable place to safeguard time in human protection. Along with this, artificial breeding and medicinal assistance can increase the number of animals, which can be the released in wild in the comming future. For example, zoos in china are protecting pandas, which otherwise can go extinct if released in the wild. Therefore, zoos can be beneficial for protection of wild animals.

In conclusion, while many people argue to free animals in wild and closing zoos, but I think zoos are important for national economy and for conservation of wild species. Thus should not be closed without considering their overall impact.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response clearly addresses the prompt by taking a strong, consistent position against closing zoos, supporting the viewpoint with relevant arguments concerning economic benefits and animal conservation. The writer covers all parts of the task well and extends ideas throughout the body paragraphs. For example, the economic argument is supported by discussing employment opportunities and government revenue through taxes and fees. Similarly, the conservation argument highlights endangered species, artificial breeding, and medicinal assistance. Although the development is slightly curtailed in places—such as the incomplete sentence in the second paragraph ('For instance, a zoo can provide employment to same number of people')—the core ideas are fully relevant and well-supported, aligning closely with the descriptors for Band 6.5 or a solid Band 6.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organisation. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from an introduction of the writer's stance to economic arguments, conservation arguments, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices such as 'This is because', 'Furthermore', 'In addition to economy', and 'In conclusion' are employed to guide the reader through the text. However, referencing is occasionally imprecise, and paragraphing or cohesive links feel slightly mechanical at times. For instance, the transition in the conclusion ('while many people argue to free animals in wild and closing zoos, but I think') contains a minor grammatical clash that affects cohesion. Overall, the structural flow is sufficient for a Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'conservation areas', 'endangered species', 'artificial breeding', and 'national economy'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'activites' instead of activities, 'maintainance' instead of maintenance, 'opportuinites' instead of opportunities, 'anmials' instead of animals, and 'comming' instead of coming. Additionally, minor phrasing issues like 'safeguard time in human protection' indicate a lack of precision. These lexical errors are frequent enough to prevent the score from reaching a Band 7, but communication is never impeded, fitting comfortably within Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and conditional-like phrasing with varying degrees of success. While many sentences are constructed correctly, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings. Examples include 'Many zoos around the world acts as centre' (subject-verb agreement error), 'on verge of extinction' (missing article), 'suitable place to safeguard time' (inappropriate noun choice), and 'which can be the released in wild' (unnecessary article). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but grammatical slips recur throughout the essay. The control of grammar corresponds to a Band 6.0.
