Student answer (Band 5.0)

I strongly disagree with the statement that "we no longer need to have animals kept in the zoos, and zoos should be closed.

Lets discuss about the advantages of animals living in the zoos. Zoo is the place where all kind of animals live safely. Every city has its specific zoo. For-example Lahore has the biggest zoo and people especially children love to visit that zoo.

Animals should be placed in the zoo has several reasons. First of all safety of animals is really important and animals could never be safe in home or farms. Because zoos have proper safety protocols and whole staff is available to have proper check and balance on animals. Secondly, care of animals is possible on zoos not at homes, because at homes we can take care of our pets at certain time but it is impossible to care those animals 24/7.

Additionally, what about the large sized animals such as elephants, camels, girrafes that cannot be placed in small cages. The most important thing is the safety of human beings, if some dangerous animals remain free all the time they can cause harm to the humans or childrens, so they should be placed under struct regulations.

Lastly it will stop the entertainment of children who visited zoos on and off. Parents will no longer be able to take their children out. Zoos have special impact on the economy of city as people have to buy tickets to enter and there are also alot of shops and swings that make contribution to the economy of city. So, zoos should never be closed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The candidate presents a clear position throughout the response, stating that they strongly disagree with closing zoos, and attempts to support this with relevant ideas such as animal safety, human protection, and economic benefits. However, the development of these ideas is limited and sometimes superficial. For example, the argument regarding the entertainment of children and economic impacts is rather simplistic and repetitive. Furthermore, there is an incomplete opening sentence due to a missing closing quotation mark and lack of a complete introductory overview. While the main parts of the prompt are addressed, the arguments lack the full extension and depth required for higher bands, placing this performance firmly in the Band 5 to 6 range. Overall, it addresses the task adequately for a moderate score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay displays some overall organization with paragraphing used to separate distinct ideas, such as safety, care, and economic impacts. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and simplistic cohesive devices like 'Lets discuss about' and 'Additionally, what about'. Referencing and substitution are sometimes unclear, and the mechanical use of cohesive ties ('First of all', 'Secondly', 'Lastly') gives the writing a formulaic feel. Paragraphs sometimes contain abrupt shifts in focus, such as mixing animal care with human safety. While the text is coherent enough to follow without major breakdown, the structural control reflects Band 5 characteristics.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate vocabulary range to communicate basic points about zoos, animals, and safety. However, there are frequent lexical errors and inappropriate word choices, such as 'placed in the zoo has several reasons', 'check and balance', and 'on zoos not at homes'. Spelling errors also occur, such as 'girrafes' and 'alot'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with limited success and noticeable errors, such as 'struct regulations' instead of 'strict regulations'. These lexical inadequacies occasionally cause slight strain for the reader, aligning the response with Band 5 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response features a mix of simple and attempted complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('children who visited zoos' instead of 'visit'), preposition misuse ('in zoos' vs 'at zoos', 'on zoos'), and missing articles. Sentence boundaries are occasionally blurred, and punctuation is inconsistent (e.g., missing closing quotation marks). Although the meaning remains mostly clear despite the errors, the high frequency of inaccurate complex structures prevents the essay from reaching a higher band score, making Band 5 an appropriate evaluation.
