Student answer (Band 6.0)

With the advancement of the world, idea of keeping animals out of the zoo is being diversed. Many people believe that zoos must get close while others agree with the fact that animals must stay in the zoo. In my opinion, we should provide animals with a separate place where they can live freely than keeping them caged in zoos.

People who argue for closing the zoos mainly agree to the fact that animals in the zoos are in a vulnerable situation. Caretakers do not take proper care of animals which leads to various problems in animals. However, it is also understood that wild animals belong to wild life and places. Many of them cannot survive in the zoos which results in their extinction. Zoos are like a prison to animals. People visit there for fun but animals there are bound to their cages. For instance, lions, tigers and cheetahs are the wild animals but when they are in the zoos, they are trapped. Many people symbolize animals in the zoos as humans in jail that is why they believe that zoos should be closed.

Moreover, there are other people who argue that zoos are the source of entertainment for children. Whenever there is a holiday, families come and visit zoos and in this way their children can get knowledge about animals. Children can watch animals and their activities. In most cases, animals fascinate humans. For example, when children watch gorillas and monkeys they are in awe beacuse gorillas and monkeys share many of the same habits as humans. On the other hand, giraffe's long neck puts many children in several questions. The another amazing fact is that anyone can see mainly all the animals in one area. Because of these reasons, half of the population don't want zoos to get close.

To sum up all the ideas, government should close the zoos and let animals live freely. The families who want to watch animals must watch documentaries on them and they should also acknowledge that animals have rights as well as humans and we can not imprison them by keeping in the zoos.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both sides of the argument regarding whether zoos should be closed, and clearly establishes a personal position that zoos should be shut down in favour of natural habitats and documentaries. The ideas presented are generally relevant, covering animal welfare concerns, extinction risks, and the educational or entertainment value for children. However, some arguments lack deep extension. For instance, the discussion on children watching gorillas and monkeys is somewhat superficial and could have been developed further to fully explore the educational counter-argument. Despite this minor limitation, all parts of the task are addressed with a clear position maintained throughout, aligning well with the Band 6.5 to 7.0 profile. We award a solid Band 6.0 here because certain ideas, particularly the counter-arguments, tend to rely on simplistic generalizations rather than fully elaborated academic points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph-by-paragraph structure. An introduction outlines the background and writer's view, body paragraphs discuss opposing perspectives, and a conclusion summarises the stance. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, as seen with phrases like 'The another amazing fact' and 'To sum up all the ideas'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different views, but logical progression within the body paragraphs occasionally stumbles due to abrupt transitions between sentences. Pronoun referencing and substitution are generally clear, though occasional clunky connectors prevent this criterion from reaching the higher band levels. Overall, the structure is easy to follow, making a Band 6.0 descriptor the most accurate fit.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their thoughts clearly. There are attempts to incorporate less common lexical items, such as 'advancement', 'vulnerable situation', 'extinction', and 'fascinate', but these are accompanied by notable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. Examples include 'idea of keeping animals out of the zoo is being diversed' and 'zoos must get close' (instead of close down), as well as spelling errors like 'beacuse'. While the writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic, the frequency of lexical slips and awkward phrasing places the response firmly within the Band 6.0 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors involving articles, prepositions, and word forms, such as 'idea of keeping' missing an article, 'than keeping them' instead of 'rather than keeping them', and 'The another amazing fact'. Additionally, punctuation and phrasing errors appear throughout, such as 'imprison them by keeping in the zoos'. Although these errors do not severely impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the grammar score from reaching Band 7.0, making Band 6.0 an appropriate evaluation.
