Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by presenting a clear position that zoos play a crucial role in society, touching upon both advantages, such as education and entertainment, and disadvantages like restricted movement for animals. However, the ideas are relatively undeveloped and lack specific examples or extended explanations. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the response contains only 236 words, falling 14 words short of the 250-word minimum. This under-length impacts the overall development and completeness of the task. Because the task is only partially developed and fails the word count threshold, a band score of 5.0 is appropriate.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the organizational structure is weak and lacks a clear overall progression. The introduction attempts to set out the writer's perspective, but body paragraphs are abrupt and disjointed. Cohesive devices are minimal or repetitive, such as 'To embark with' and 'other people believe that', which are inaccurate or unnatural. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making the flow bumpy. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas within paragraphs lacks logical refinement. Overall, the coherence and cohesion reflect a Band 5 level due to the inadequate and mechanical use of cohesive devices and lack of smooth progression.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently reusing terms such as 'zoo', 'children', and 'society'. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'want to visited zoo', 'important value', and 'cannot effort the tickets'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with limited success, and spelling or word-form inaccuracies are frequent (e.g., 'entertaining for our society'). While the meaning is generally communicated, the limited range and frequent errors place this performance firmly at Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences. Attempts at complex sentences are often faulty, as seen in phrases like 'animals can not move freely because they are kept in small restricted enclosure' (missing articles and pluralisation issues). There are frequent punctuation and capitalization errors throughout the text, such as starting sentences with lowercase letters ('some people', 'there are'). Errors in subject-verb agreement and modal usage ('animals can not move') frequently occur. However, because basic meaning is mostly preserved despite the errors, a band score of 5.0 is assigned.
