Student answer (Band 6.0)

Zoos have always been an integral landmark of the communities. There is an ongoing debate regarding their importance and need in a society. Some organizations advocate against locking animals in cages, hence for the closure of zoos. I partly concur with this statement as there are two sides of the coins, theres more to the story rather than simply emphasizing the closure.

The most compelling argument in the favour of this view is that locking up animals in cages, deliberately snatching them away from their families and colonies just for the entertainment purposes is extremely unnatural and inhumane Hence this practice that is the primary concept of a zoo should be alleviated. Another supporting reason is that retaining animals in manmade artificial cantonments, striping them of their natural habitat is a major contributing factor to making them more hostile and violent in nature.

On the other hand a few particular zoos act as facilitation centres for animals, allowing biologists to enhance their research on multiple aspects of animals, ultimately using that for the betterment of these animals. For instance, experts can investigate the potential cures for several animal diseases. Additionally, with the increased construction, humans are expanding more and more into the forests, destroying the natural habitats, eventually, making the animals homeless, with no place to go. In these kinds of particular scenarios, zoos are ultimately a beneficial resolution.

To sum it up, although i am against keeping animals locked down in cages, the certain upsides of zoos cannot be undermined. Hence providing strong basis for my partial agreement.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position ('I partly concur with this statement') and supporting it with arguments on both sides. The student discusses the negative aspects of zoos, such as confinement and artificial environments, as well as their benefits for research and conservation against habitat destruction. Ideas are generally well-developed and extended, such as the example regarding human encroachment into forests. However, there is a minor tendency to over-generalize in places, and some points could be integrated more smoothly. Overall, the task is successfully addressed, meeting the criteria for a Band 6.5 or solid Band 7, reflecting clear communication of a balanced viewpoint with relevant examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear logical organization with distinct paragraphing. Each paragraph has a clear central topic, moving from the introduction to arguments against zoos, arguments in favor, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used to signal shifts in argument, such as 'On the other hand', 'Additionally', and 'To sum it up'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally faulty or mechanical, as seen in minor punctuation omissions and slightly abrupt transitions between sentences (e.g., 'Hence this practice that is the primary concept...'). Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, maintaining a coherent overall arrangement throughout the response.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'integral landmark', 'compelling argument', 'incontestable' (implied context), and 'encroachment' (though 'construction' is used instead). There are some inappropriate word choices and collocations, such as 'alleviated' used instead of 'abolished' or 'eliminated', and 'cantonments' instead of 'enclosures' or 'habitats'. Spelling is generally accurate, but minor word-choice errors occur ('theres more to the story', 'favour'). The lexical range is sufficient to convey the message with reasonable precision, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures such as relative clauses and conditional-like framing ('In these kinds of particular scenarios, zoos are ultimately a beneficial resolution'). There are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text, such as missing apostrophes ('theres'), run-on phrasing ('inhumane Hence this practice'), and missing commas before transition phrases. However, these errors rarely impede communication, and the meaning remains clear. The control of grammar aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors.
