Student answer (Band 5.0)

Some people argue that we should keep animals in zoos while others believe that we should not keep them in zoos. From my perspective, animals should not kept in zoos and they should live in forest.

To begin with, we should not be captive and they should live their lives in forest where they belong. Animals should spend their life forest because keeping them in cage is inhumane activity. Nowadays many people keep animals in zoos and sometimes use them to earn money. For example, Sen Diego zoo is one of the well known for earning money by arranging live show of monkey, lion and many more animals.

Moreover, while kepting animals in cage we generally decrese thier abilitis such as their ability to hunt, roam and excetra. By living in a cage sometimes carnivorous animals became herbivorous. They usually lose their own identity by living in zoo.

In my opinion, zoos should be closed because it takes freedom of animals. Even in zoos animals could not roam freely. If animals live in forest than they can easily fulfill what they want without depending on someone else. i think goverment should take some serious actions and put some regulations too.

To conclude, animals should spend thier life in forest because jungle is their habitat and nowadays people use animals to earn money and government should takesome serious actions too. Additionally, by keeping animals in cage they sometimes lose thier own abilities so they should live thierlife whithout depending on someone else.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position against keeping animals in zoos, supporting this with ideas such as animal welfare, the loss of natural instincts, and the commercialisation of wildlife. However, the development of these ideas remains somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the argument that zoos are run to earn money is mentioned multiple times without expanding into deeper socio-economic considerations. Furthermore, there are awkward phrasing issues, such as saying 'animals should not kept in zoos', which occasionally obscure the clarity of the stance. While all parts of the prompt are addressed, the ideas are not fully extended or substantiated with robust examples, leaning towards generalisations. Consequently, the response satisfies the requirements for a Band 5.5 to 6.0 level, where relevant ideas are present but under-developed, meriting a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays a recognizable overall structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, demonstrating an attempt at paragraphing. However, logical progression is frequently disrupted by repetitive points and awkward transitional phrases like 'To begin with, we should not be captive'. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes incorrectly, such as the misuse of referencing pronouns and conjunctions (e.g., 'while kepting animals in cage we generally decrese thier abilitis'). Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion within paragraphs lacks smooth flow due to abrupt shifts and dense clusters of mechanical errors. This places the response firmly at Band 5.0, where organization is visible but overall progression is hindered by faulty and repetitive cohesive devices.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student employs a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'inhumane', 'carnivorous', 'herbivorous', and 'habitat'. However, there are numerous noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'kepting', 'decrese', 'thier', 'abilitis', 'excetra', and 'whithout'. The writer attempts less common vocabulary, but these attempts are often marred by inaccurate spelling or inappropriate collocation, such as 'carnivorous animals became herbivorous'. These errors can cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the lexical score from reaching higher bands. The vocabulary range is sufficient to convey the basic message, aligning with the Band 5 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty and fraught with grammatical inaccuracies. Examples of persistent errors include missing auxiliary verbs ('animals should not kept in zoos'), incorrect verb forms ('while kepting'), subject-verb agreement issues ('carnivorous animals became herbivorous'), and frequent spelling mistakes. Punctuation is also basic, with doubled spaces and missing commas. Although the meaning can generally be deciphered, the high frequency of errors in basic and complex structures alike causes noticeable difficulty for the reader, placing the grammar performance at a Band 5.0 level.
