Student answer (Band 6.0)
Because of deforestation,a lot of animals today face loss of habitats. Because of this and global warming, a lot of species of animals are facing the danger of extinction. Zoo is a place where animals are confined against their will to put them on display mainly for educational purposes. I agree with the opinion that zoos today should be closed because the primary intention behind them is not to protect the animals, but to put them on display for economic and educational benefits.
A lot of animals today are found roaming in cities which are near to the forests. The main reason for that is the destruction of jungles and therefore lack of food. If we really want to stop this, the solution is not to enslave them in cages like in zoos, but to put more emphasis on nationals parks and wildlife sanctuaries, where they can freely move around and are more like their home, unlike zoos. Although, the primary intention behind these national parks and sanctuaries is to protect the endangered species of animals, they are main attractions for many of the tourists as well.
In zoo, animals are confined mainly to attract people to visit it instead of protecting them and making them roam around freely. People want to gain money from these animals, who have already lost their home because of these very people's greed that affects forests and nature. A lot of animals today are also used in circus. These animals often come from zoo or are enslaved privately for the economic purposes. Against their will, some people train them and use them for their own advantage.
Becuase of the wrong intention, and selfish purpose to confine animals in zoos, I think zoos today should be closed and if that is not possible then, the number of zoos should decrease while government should look to build more wildlife sanctuaries and national parks for the protection of these animals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your response successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position that zoos should be closed in favor of national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. You have met the requirements for a solid score by covering the main prompt, though some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, your arguments regarding animal exploitation and the economic motives behind zoos are clearly stated, but points such as educational benefits mentioned in the introduction receive less depth of extension. To move into higher bands, ensure every main idea is thoroughly supported with extended explanations or richer examples. You also touch upon the transition of animals to circuses, which is a relevant supporting point, but your overall progression would benefit from slightly more rigorous extension of how sanctuaries directly resolve the issues you raise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
Your essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance maintained throughout. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate your introduction, arguments regarding habitat loss and alternatives, economic exploitation, and your final conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or repetitive, such as the repeated use of phrase starters like 'A lot of animals today' and 'Because of'. Referencing is generally functional, but smoother transitional phrases and a wider variety of cohesive devices would improve the logical flow between sentences and paragraphs. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, work on varying your sentence openers and ensuring that pronouns and demonstratives refer back seamlessly without needing repetitive lexical items.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'extinction', 'enslave', 'exploitation', and 'wildlife sanctuaries'. However, there are some word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as writing 'nationals parks' instead of 'national parks' and using 'economic purposes' where 'commercial purposes' might be more natural. Your spelling and word choices generally do not impede communication, allowing the reader to follow your points easily. To reach a higher band, focus on refining your word choices and incorporating more sophisticated, precise academic phrasing and less common collocations to express your ideas with greater nuance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as conditional sentences ('If we really want to stop this, the solution is not to...') and subordinate clauses. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including a spelling mistake in a transition ('Becuase'), an article omission ('In zoo' instead of 'In zoos'), and occasional comma splices or awkward phrasing. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and your meaning remains clear. To improve your grammatical score, focus on eliminating basic mechanical slips, paying close attention to singular and plural noun agreement, article usage, and ensuring your complex sentence structures remain entirely accurate.
