Student answer (Band 5.5)

There is an ongoing debate about whether zoos are necessary whether they should be closed. I disagree with this statement because zoos save endangered animals. In the upcoming paragraphs I will discuss reasons of this with suitable examples.

Firstly, zoos are important for those animals which endangered. Nowadays, many animals are killed by hunters and some are killed for medical purposes. If zoos are closed then it put impact on endangered animals as well as environment because if these kind of animals are extinct then our food chain will be disturbed as a result, human and other kind of animals can not longer survive on earth. For explain, the survey was conducted by world health organization which reveals that more than 40% animals are extinct if zoos are closed such as tiger, rhinos, gorillas and sea turtles. There, zoos are still important for animals.

Secondly, it put impact on countries economy as well as unemployment as zoos are closed as zoos are source of entertainment of public. If zoos are close then people can not visit on any special place which they see animals and they never pay tickets. On the other hand, people they take care of zoos they also lost their jobs due to this unemployment rate will be increase. For instance, more than 10% people earn money from zoos. However, zoos are crucial for entertainment of public.

To conclude, I disagree zoos should be closed as save the endangered animal is our priority as well as it also help of people for earn money.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear position that zoos should not be closed because they protect endangered species and benefit the economy. However, some ideas are under-developed or lack clarity. For instance, the argument regarding the economic impact and unemployment is rather limited and relies on sweeping statements without sufficient logical explanation, such as 'more than 10% people earn money from zoos.' Additionally, the evidence provided, like the claim that 40% of animals would become extinct based on a World Health Organization survey, is unsupported and lacks realistic support. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to extend and fully develop their main arguments with more plausible, well-supported examples rather than generalized assertions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs supporting the writer's view, and a brief conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct main ideas. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing is not always clear, leading to occasional disruptions in the flow of ideas. For example, transitional phrases like 'For explain' are inaccurate, and cohesive devices such as 'Firstly' and 'Secondly' are used in a somewhat rigid manner. Furthermore, pronouns and referencing links, such as 'it put impact', lack precise clarity regarding what they refer to. To improve, the writer should employ a wider and more natural range of cohesive devices and ensure smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task and attempts to use less common items, such as 'endangered', 'extinct', and 'unemployment rate'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors in word choice, word form, and collocation that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include writing 'reasons of this' instead of 'reasons for this', 'put impact' instead of 'have an impact', 'For explain' instead of 'For example', and 'earn money from zoos' instead of 'derive their income from zoos'. Some spelling and word-form inaccuracies also appear, such as 'can not longer'. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their vocabulary range and demonstrate greater precision and awareness of collocations and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside some attempts at complex forms that are often faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text that can cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include article omission ('if zoos are closed then it put impact on endangered animals as well as environment'), pluralization and subject-verb agreement errors ('more than 40% animals are extinct', 'people they take care of zoos they also lost'), and prepositional or structural issues ('help of people for earn money'). To progress to the next level, the writer needs to increase the variety of error-free complex sentence structures and exercise better control over basic grammar, verb forms, and articles.
