Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is a considerable debate over wherther zoos should remain opened or closed. Some people belive that it is crucial to leave the animals in their natural habitat of wild but I firmly disagree with this statement that all animals should be left in wild and zoos must be closed.

One of the most significant reason to support my argument is that some animals are already at the stage of extinction while others are endangered as well. In the wild, these animals are hunted by hunters for selling their skin and other body parts illegaly. Although there are several steps are taken by governments to preserve the natural habitat of animals, these are not enough for saving those animals that are already in the state of extinction. In zoos, there are better steps taken to increase the number of those species that are at the risk of extinction. On the other hand if the zoos are shut down and not much attention is paid for their preservation, we may lost them forever.

Another strong reason to support the zoos is the awareness compaigns that can be launched through zoos. For instance, when people visits these zios they should be provided a guide to tell them how much they are left in nature and how can they help in supporting their habitats. Through these measures we can create a better world for humans and wild creatures as well.

By contrary, I do not support any activity where animals become the source of entertaining the public as done by circuses.

In conclusion, its our responsibility to protect animals species by supprting the efforts of governments in their conservation measures through awareness inititatives, banning hunting and protecting and increqsing the number of endangered and extinct species.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by taking a clear position that zoos should not be closed. Relevant ideas are presented, such as the role of zoos in protecting endangered species and providing educational awareness campaigns. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, placing the response squarely at this level. For instance, the discussion around endangered species is introduced well, but the argument could have been extended by exploring specific conservation breeding programs. Similarly, the final body paragraph introduces a counter-argument regarding circuses ('By contrary, I do not support any activity where animals become the source of entertaining the public') which feels disconnected and under-developed rather than fully integrated into a nuanced evaluation. The overall stance remains clear throughout, but deeper extension of all main points is required to reach higher levels.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, and the use of paragraphs to separate distinct ideas. Progression is generally apparent, moving from extinction concerns to awareness campaigns. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. For example, cohesive devices and referencing within and between sentences occasionally show awkwardness, such as the abrupt transition in the final body paragraph beginning with 'By contrary'. Furthermore, referencing is not always entirely clear, as seen in phrases like 'how much they are left in nature', where it is slightly ambiguous what the pronoun refers to. Paragraphing is used, but the logical flow between paragraphs would benefit from smoother transitional phrases to guide the reader effortlessly through the arguments.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the writer's opinions with a range of standard terms related to wildlife and conservation. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'endangered', 'extinction', and 'conservation measures', which demonstrates an effort to expand lexical range. However, there are some spelling and word-choice errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'wherther' instead of 'whether', 'belive' instead of 'believe', 'compaigns' instead of 'campaigns', 'visists' instead of 'visits', 'zios' instead of 'zoos', and 'increqsing'. Collocation is also occasionally unnatural, such as 'better steps taken' instead of 'better measures implemented'. Fortunately, these inaccuracies do not seriously impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the arguments easily.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to vary sentence structures with clauses introduced by 'when', 'that', and 'although'. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that prevent higher achievement. These include issues with articles, plurals, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'One of the most significant reason' instead of 'reasons', 'several steps are taken by governments' where the passive structure is slightly awkward, and 'we may lost them forever' instead of 'lose'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly around clauses and introductory phrases. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, their persistent presence across various sentence types indicates that tighter grammatical control is needed.
