Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task partially by presenting arguments on both sides of the issue regarding whether zoos should be closed. A clear position is expressed in the introduction and conclusion, advocating for keeping animals in zoos for educational purposes and animal health. However, the ideas are somewhat limited and under-developed. For instance, the points about children learning and animal care are briefly mentioned with repetitive phrasing rather than being fully extended with well-supported examples. The mention of a survey is vague and lacks specific detail. To move to a higher level, the ideas need to be more fully explored, with extended explanations and more robust, relevant supporting examples rather than relying on general assertions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay displays some basic organization, separating the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas throughout the text. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure of the paragraphs feels disjointed. Cohesive devices are used minimally and rather repetitively, such as 'on the one hand' and 'on the other hand', but transitional phrases are frequently inaccurate or misused, creating a mechanical feel. For example, sentences within the body paragraphs jump between disparate ideas—such as children learning, zoo guards, and surveys—without smooth logical bridges. Referencing is also unclear in places, such as pronoun confusion regarding who is being referred to. Improving this aspect requires a more logical sequencing of thoughts and a wider, more accurate range of cohesive devices to guide the reader effortlessly.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for communicating basic ideas. There is a frequent occurrence of noticeable lexical errors in word choice, word form, and spelling, such as 'abhout', 'althought', 'guids', 'guit', 'britison', and 'statment'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, but these attempts are often imprecise or inaccurate, such as 'cherry on the cake' or 'animal keep loving their guids'. These inaccuracies can cause some difficulty for the reader and strain comprehension at times. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to expand their vocabulary range, use less common lexical items with greater precision in collocation and style, and significantly improve spelling and word formation accuracy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The writing demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences. When the student attempts complex sentence forms, they are frequently faulty, leading to frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause difficulty for the reader. Issues are widespread across basic structures, including subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'people are have', 'animal should kept'), articles (e.g., 'in zoo', 'go zoo'), plurals, and missing prepositions within grammatical patterns. Punctuation is also erratic, with missing capitals and incorrect full-stop placements. To progress, the student must work on mastering basic sentence construction, improving verb tense consistency and voice, and increasing the variety of error-free complex structures.
