Student answer (Band 5.0)
Some people believe that keeping animals in zoos is no longer necessary and that zoos should be closed. Others argue that zoos play an important role in prtecting animals and educating the public. This essay will discuss both views and eluidate reasons behind my opinion.
On the one hand, there are several reasons that zoos can provide some important benefits. One of the main reasons is that they can help protect endangered species through breeding programmes. In addition to that i believe that zoos give people an opportunity to learn about wildlife and understand the importance of protecting the environment. For example, when i wan child i went to zoo in my hometown where i developed greater intrest in wildlife and i saw there was large carefully designed environment that are intended to meet the needs of particular species.
On the other hand, there are many reasons why people believe zoos should be closed. I think keeping wild animals in small enclosures can stop them from living in their natural way. Animals such as elephants, lions and bears need large areas to move arround and behave naturally and other factor is that some zoos may not provide suitable living conditions, which can negatively affect their physical and mental health. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response responds to the task only minimally, primarily because the length requirement of 250 words is not met, with the student's text containing only 214 words and cutting off abruptly mid-sentence at the end. While the writer manages to touch upon both sides of the argument regarding zoos, the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For instance, the introduction states that the essay will elucidate reasons behind the author's opinion, but the final body paragraph breaks off before a clear position or final conclusion can be fully established. To reach higher bands, the writer must ensure the word count exceeds the minimum threshold and fully develop each supporting point with thorough explanations and concrete examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response displays some organization with recognizable paragraph breaks separating the introduction and body arguments, but there is no clear overall progression due to the incomplete ending. Cohesive devices are used in a basic manner, such as 'On the one hand' and 'In addition to that', but referencing is sometimes unclear or repetitive. Paragraphing is attempted, yet the final paragraph remains unpolished and trails off. To improve, the writer needs to ensure that logical links between sentences are maintained smoothly and that each paragraph drives toward a fully articulated conclusion rather than stopping abruptly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The lexical resource is limited but minimally adequate for conveying basic points. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items, such as 'endangered species' and 'breeding programmes', but noticeable errors in spelling and word choice appear throughout the text. Examples include typos like 'prtecting', 'eluidate', 'intrest', and 'arround'. Additionally, capitalization errors such as 'i' instead of 'I' recur. These errors do not entirely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score. To achieve a higher band, the writer should expand their range of vocabulary, ensure accurate spelling of common terms, and refine word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer employs a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences alongside a few basic complex forms. Frequent errors are present in punctuation, capitalization, and article usage, such as missing commas in complex clauses and lowercase pronouns. For instance, 'when i wan child i went to zoo' contains multiple grammatical and structural inaccuracies regarding verb tense, article omission, and agreement. While some simple structures remain accurate, the frequency of basic errors causes some difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures while maintaining better control over punctuation and minor word patterns.
