Student answer (Band 5.5)

we no need to have animals kept in zoos nowadys, therefore zoos should be closed. This essay will explore the main reasons in upcoming paragraphs. I strongly disagree from this statement, i will exlain it with two solid reasons.

To commence with, animals should be kept in zoos because its a safe place for animals and it is also important for public safety. There are may dangerous animals which can harm human beings. For instance, a research of Oxford univeristy, is is claimed that wild animals like tiger, bear, wolf and heyna are not suitable for our environment and they are count in endangered speices. As a result, government should take notice and make a law for animals to keep in Zoos.

Another main reason for keeping zoos open is the protection of endangered animals. Zoo can provide safe atmosphere to wild species. To illustrate, support breeding programmes to increase their populations. This can help prevent some species to becoming extinct. Moreover, zoos are source of entertainment and education for childern as well as for elders. People can observe different kinds of animals and learn about their life styles.

To conclude, public safety is very crucial and government should implement safety measures to avoid any possible harm to people. At the same time, zoos should be maintained because they provide education and recreational benefits to families. Furthermore safety and protection of wild species are also equally imperative. Therefore it is a responsibility of government and public to save the environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position right from the introduction where the writer states, 'I strongly disagree from this statement.' The main ideas are relevant and touch upon public safety, animal protection, and educational benefits. However, some ideas are under-developed or lack full extension. For instance, the argument regarding Oxford University and endangered species in the second paragraph lacks specific detail and contains unclear connections. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to fully develop all main points with more relevant and extended supporting explanations rather than relying on brief, sweeping assertions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, and the writing is divided into logical paragraphs. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. The writer relies heavily on basic cohesive devices and transition phrases such as 'To commence with,' 'For instance,' and 'To conclude,' which can feel somewhat repetitive and formulaic. Additionally, referencing is not always clear, as seen in the transition between sentences in the second paragraph where the link between the Oxford research and the conclusion about zoos is abrupt. Improving the flexibility of cohesive devices and ensuring smoother logical transitions between sentences would elevate this aspect of the writing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms like 'endangered species,' 'recreational benefits,' and 'breeding programmes.' However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that reflect a limited resource, such as 'nowadys' instead of 'nowadays,' 'exlain' instead of 'explain,' 'heyna' instead of 'hyena,' and 'speices' instead of 'species.' The writer also attempts less common vocabulary with some inaccuracy, such as 'they are count in endangered speices' instead of 'they are considered endangered species.' These errors do not seriously impede communication, but eliminating them and showing greater control over less common lexical items is necessary for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'There are may dangerous animals which can harm human beings.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Examples of grammatical issues include preposition misuse ('disagree from this statement' instead of 'disagree with'), article omissions ('Zoo can provide safe atmosphere' instead of 'A zoo can provide a safe atmosphere'), and subject-verb agreement or pluralisation errors ('education for childern' and 'governments should take notice'). While the writer successfully forms some complex sentences, the frequency of basic grammatical slips keeps the accuracy at this level. Increasing the proportion of error-free sentences and refining control over articles and prepositions will lead to better scores.
