Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, zoos are one of the best ways to attract tourists in urban areas, and I believe zoos should be open and filled with animals all the time so individuals can visit the zoos and get a chance to see wildlife.

Recently, population has become the major threat to wildlife, and zoos are the best way to secure animals and their shelter; also, it is a very positive way to secure endangered species and treat them kindly. For instance, about 30% of forests have already been cut down in the past few years to make buildings and societies, and the world's population has drastically increased by more than 50% in the last few decades, which is the main reason for making zoos in big cities.

Furthermore, animals who live in zoos get much better treatment and security, and they have enough resources to live a better life rather than being hunted by individuals. For instance, every country has unique animal species to show; for example, Africa has elephants, and Australia has kangaroos. People visit their zoos to see those creatures, and it's very beneficial for the government because it increases tourism and promotes the nation's culture. Wildlife also has channels to promote their zoos and attract tourists, which noticeably boosts economic growth.

In conclusion, zoos are like an organ for cities, and citizens get a chance to see several animal species that they can't see because forests are far away from cities. Also, zoos are the best shelter for animals; they have been provided with a good food source and the best environment to live their life, and I think we need to have animals in zoos to save nature.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you disagree with closing zoos and argue that they protect animals and attract visitors. You address the task with relevant reasons, including habitat loss, protection of endangered species, and tourism, and you give examples such as elephants and kangaroos. This meets the task well overall. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained: for example, the claim that zoo animals receive “much better treatment” would be stronger with evidence or a qualification acknowledging that zoo conditions can vary. The population and forest-loss figures also need a clearer link to why zoos are necessary. Developing these ideas more precisely and considering the opposing view would make the argument more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion. The ideas generally progress from animal protection to tourism, and signposts such as “Furthermore” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. This is a coherent arrangement. Some connections, however, are mechanical or unclear. In the second body paragraph, the move from animal security to national tourism benefits is abrupt, and “Wildlife also has channels to promote their zoos” does not clearly identify who or what is promoting them. The conclusion repeats several points from the body rather than drawing them together. Use clearer links between each paragraph’s main claim and its examples, and vary referencing so that relationships between ideas are more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main argument, including topic-related terms such as “endangered species,” “wildlife,” “shelter,” and “economic growth.” There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “drastically increased” and “promotes the nation’s culture.” However, word choice and collocation are often imprecise or repetitive, which limits flexibility. “Population” is used where “human population” is intended, “secure animals and their shelter” is unnatural, and “zoos are like an organ for cities” does not express the intended comparison clearly. “Wildlife also has channels” is similarly difficult to interpret. Aim for more natural collocations and precise terms, and avoid repeating “best” and “animals” when a more exact expression is available.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “which,” and “rather than.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and punctuation generally supports readability. Some grammatical errors remain, but they rarely prevent understanding. For example, “Recently, population has become the major threat” needs an article or a more complete noun phrase, while “animals who live in zoos” uses an unsuitable relative pronoun for animals. In the final sentence, “they have been provided with a good food source” is an awkward passive construction, and “live their life” has a number-agreement problem. Review articles, relative clauses, and singular/plural agreement, while continuing to use complex sentences with careful checking.
