Student answer (Band 6.5)

Animals including birds kept in cages and small shelters, for humans to come and see them for their lesiure is somehow named as a "Zoo". I completely agree with the statment "we no longer need to have animals kept in zoos".This inhumane activity should be put to an end, especially in 2026, we shouldn't be visiting or keeping zoos.

When i used to be a kid, i loved the idea of visiting the zoo. The sheer enthusiasm and excitement, that i would get to see a Lion, a Tiger, a Bear, and what not, used to be on the top of my mind before every visit. But everytime i visited them, i questioned myself and even my parents that why are not these animals as active as they were shown in the animal documentaries. Not just that they often look weaker, lazier, tired, exhausted by the noise around.

That unsettelment inside me has never left my mind and heart. Until i grew up, and start learning about zoos.I remember that example of, if we put a human in the cage, for his whole life, how would it feel despite you serve him with food and water, and air to breathe and i got all my answers. That it is inhumane for those animals, which are being captured from their natural, wide, lively habitats and are now kept in these small cages and shelters for the amusment of humanity.

Keeping animals in the zoos, just for the sake of entertainment and making money out of them should be discouraged. We should demand from policy makers to end this whole chain of systematically caging animals and should educate our childern about empathy and kindness towards animals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you completely agree that zoos should no longer keep animals, and the conclusion reinforces this by calling for the practice to end. You support your view with a personal childhood experience and explain the contrast between animals’ natural habitats and confined enclosures. These relevant examples and explanations give the response a clear line of argument. However, the discussion relies heavily on the personal example and broad claims about animals being weak or distressed; the case would be more fully developed with another reason, such as the limits of captive breeding or the availability of wildlife sanctuaries. Explain how your proposed alternatives could protect animals while meeting conservation needs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable progression: it states your view, recalls childhood visits, explains how your perspective changed, and ends with a call for action. Paragraphing generally supports this sequence, and links such as “But,” “Not just that,” and “Until I grew up” help connect the narrative. This gives the essay an overall coherent arrangement. To make the progression more controlled, use clearer topic sentences to distinguish your personal experience from the broader argument, and avoid abrupt transitions such as “That unsettelment inside me has never left my mind and heart.” Some references, including “them” and “that example,” require the reader to infer their precise meaning. More precise referencing and less conversational linking would strengthen cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range to express your position and describe the animals’ conditions, including “inhumane,” “natural… habitats,” “systematically caging,” and “empathy and kindness.” These choices show attempts to use topic-specific and less common vocabulary. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “for their lesiure,” “the amusment of humanity,” and “that unsettelment.” Spelling errors in “statment,” “childern,” and “everytime” also reduce accuracy. A few expressions, such as “what not” and “making money out of them,” are conversational rather than precise for an academic essay. Aim for accurate collocations and proofread spelling so your vocabulary conveys the argument more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional comparison about placing a human in a cage and longer sentences explaining your childhood experience. The main ideas remain understandable, but control is uneven. For example, “When i used to be a kid” has incorrect capitalisation, while “Until i grew up, and start learning about zoos” shifts tense and does not form a complete, well-controlled clause. The sentence beginning “I remember that example of, if we put a human…” is also difficult to follow because its clauses are not joined clearly. There are further issues with sentence boundaries and punctuation, such as the missing space after “zoos”. Practise building complex sentences with clear clause structure and consistent tense.
