Student answer (Band 5.5)

The zoo help to earn money and some other purposes. However, it is believed by some people that there is no longer need of kept animals in zoos. Therefore it must be closed down. I partially agree with this statement. This essay will discuss why i not completely agree and explain reasons behind this.

Some people believed that kept animals in zoos is a type of cruelity so thats why do not kept in zoos. Firstly, animals are living things they are made by nature according to their survival or habitat so it is difficult for animals to survive in frustrated place. Furthermore, some zoos have limited land or have not much facilities to kept and maintain animlas so well therefore it is also cruelity for them. Secondly, some staff in zoos behave very badly with animals and do not fed them properly, moreover, researches by killing and experiment on animals it is also a type of cruelity which should stop.

On the other hand zoos also have a lot of benefits, first of all a lot of people get jobs with zoos and it help to earn money so thats why it have a economy benefits. Secondly, there are a lot of species which are endangered now so zoos help to breeding and prevent species to become extinct completely.

In conclusion, zoos cruel animals by various ways such as if zoos are small and do not behave well with animals by staff moreover, by killing animals for researches and other purposes. On the other hand zoos have economic purpose and also prevent endangered species.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both sides of the question and state a clear, qualified position: “I partially agree.” The essay gives relevant reasons for closing or reforming zoos, including poor conditions and staff treatment, then counters these with employment and conservation benefits. This covers the task, but some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For example, the claim that zoos help endangered species would be stronger with an example of a breeding or reintroduction programme, while the economic point is brief and does not explain why it outweighs the welfare concerns. Your conclusion summarises both sides but does not clearly restate the basis for your partial agreement. Develop and weigh the main reasons more explicitly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph presenting concerns about animal welfare, a contrasting paragraph on benefits, and a conclusion. This makes the overall line of argument understandable. You also use signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “On the other hand” to guide the reader. However, some linking is mechanical, and connections between ideas are occasionally unclear. In the first body paragraph, for instance, the sentence about research follows the point about staff treatment without explaining how the ideas relate. The conclusion repeats earlier points rather than drawing them together into a clear final judgement. Use fewer formulaic transitions and make the relationship between each reason and your position explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “endangered,” “survive,” “habitat,” and “extinct.” However, the range is limited and several inaccurate word choices or collocations make the writing less natural. Phrases such as “cruelity,” “frustrated place,” “economy benefits,” and “zoos cruel animals” do not express the intended meanings clearly or idiomatically. Spelling errors such as “animlas” and “thats” also reduce accuracy. Build a more precise vocabulary for animal welfare and conservation, and check word forms and spelling. For example, use “cruelty,” “unsuitable environment,” “economic benefits,” and “zoos mistreat animals” in the relevant contexts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “so,” “therefore,” and “which,” and the main argument is generally understandable. However, errors in sentence structure, verb forms, agreement, articles, and punctuation occur across the response. Examples include “The zoo help,” “there is no longer need,” “animals … is,” and “zoos help to breeding.” Some sentences also combine several ideas without clear grammatical control, particularly the sentence beginning “Firstly, animals are living things.” Capitalise “I,” and check subject–verb agreement, infinitive and gerund forms, and sentence boundaries. More accurate control of these patterns would make your reasoning easier to follow.
