Student answer (Band 5.0)

Throuhout history, zoo is a place of entertainment for everyone. There is a debate nowadays that zoos should be closed as we no longer need to have animals kept in them. This essay will shed light on this topic. I really enjoyed going zoo in my childhood and that is one of the reasons that I disagree with this statement as zoo is one of the sources of entertainment as well as it has an educational value.

Firstly, zoos are the places where different animals are kept including those which were about to extinct. For example, panda is an animal which was about to be extinct, while through inside breeding, it has been improved.

On the other hand, some people also think that zoos should be closed due to poor hygeine and maintainance issues; however, this could be improved through better planning by the government.

Moreover, human brain remembers things with dual coding and zoos are one of the essential sources to provide education to younger kids. For instance, Schools should arrange trips to zoos, where the primary students get to know about different animals and creatures which help them to build their knowledge.

In conclusion, although there is an argument that zoos should be closed and animals should not be kept in the zoos due to different problems which can be fixed through proper plan by the government. In my opinion zoos is the place where we can educate learners and save animals by getting extinct which are in endenger.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You state a clear disagreement and give relevant reasons: zoos can support endangered species and educate children. The panda example and the suggestion of school visits help make these points concrete. However, the response only partially develops the task: the conservation claim is brief, and the educational point is asserted rather than explained in depth. The counterargument about hygiene and maintenance is acknowledged, but its impact is not explored before you dismiss it as fixable. The conclusion also repeats the main ideas without fully resolving the argument. The response is 242 words, eight words below the 250-word minimum; the nine words copied from the prompt are not counted. Develop each reason with clearer explanation and a specific supporting example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, supporting paragraphs and a conclusion. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “On the other hand,” “Moreover” and “In conclusion” help signal the direction of the argument. However, progression between ideas is not always smooth: the paragraph about hygiene and maintenance is very brief, and the shift from conservation to education could be connected more explicitly. Some linking is mechanical, and the final sentence is difficult to follow because several ideas are joined together without clear relationships. Use each body paragraph to develop one main point, and make references such as “this” or “which” clearly identify the idea they refer to.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “entertainment,” “educational value,” “breeding” and “endangered,” so the reader can understand the main subject and your reasons. However, the range is limited and some word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which makes parts of the response awkward or unclear. Examples include “inside breeding,” “build their knowledge,” and “save animals by getting extinct.” There are also spelling errors such as “Throuhout,” “hygeine,” “maintainance” and “endenger.” Aim for more precise phrases when discussing conservation and education, and check spelling carefully. Replacing repeated general wording with accurate topic-specific expressions would make your argument clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a concession in “although there is an argument…” and a relative clause in “panda is an animal which…”. However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to understand. For example, “I really enjoyed going zoo” is missing an article and preposition, while “zoos is the place” has subject–verb disagreement. The conclusion beginning “although” is not completed as a full sentence, and the final clause does not form a clear grammatical relationship with the rest of the sentence. Practise accurate article use, agreement and complete sentence structures before adding more complex clauses.
