Student answer (Band 6.5)

While some people believe that zoos are outdated and should be closed, others believe that they still serve a purpose. I would completely disagree with the closing of zoos because of their educational value for the children and their role in wild life conservation.

The primary reason is that zoos are the great source of entertainment and learning for the growing children as it gives them a real life exposure to the animals that they only see on the television. Being present at zoo gives them a real life experience and build curiosity on how different types of animals exists and they also learn respect for nature. For example, when schools trips visit any wild life park, it encourages the students on how to take care of animals. It provides them an insight on how they can become a vet or zoologist in future and serve their purpose for the animals.

Moreover, zoos play a critical role in protecting endangered species from extinction. Many animals face habitat destruction and climate change in the wild. Whereas zoos are run by breeding programs and it helps them rebuild animal popuations. For example, in Pakistan the white tigers population has reached low and there are only few numbers alive. To overcome this issue, the zoo can play a vital function as source of breeding of such animals.

In conclusion, while animal welfare should be heavily monitored, zoos must remain open because they project the protection of endangered wild life meanwhile it also helps the younger generation in building animal awareness and related education.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction—“I would completely disagree”—and remains consistent in the conclusion. You address the question with two relevant reasons: zoos can educate children and contribute to conservation. Both are supported with examples, including school visits and breeding programmes. This gives the response a clear, relevant argument. To develop it further, explain the conservation example more precisely: the claim about white tigers in Pakistan is not clearly connected to endangered-species recovery, and the proposed role of zoos is asserted rather than demonstrated. The educational point could also be extended beyond career awareness to show how learning translates into broader understanding or action. More specific explanation would make the support less generalised.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion that restates your position. The progression from education to conservation is logical, and signposts such as “The primary reason,” “Moreover,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. Some linking is less smooth within sentences, particularly “Whereas zoos are run by breeding programs,” which does not connect grammatically or logically to the preceding sentence as intended. References such as “it” in “it helps them rebuild animal populations” are also not fully clear. Aim to connect related claims with complete, well-linked sentences and use pronouns only when their reference is unmistakable.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “educational value,” “endangered species,” “habitat destruction,” and “breeding programs.” These choices make the subject clear, and some less common terms are attempted. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “great source of entertainment,” “build curiosity,” “play a vital function,” and “project the protection.” There are also spelling or form issues in “wild life,” “popuations,” and “schools trips.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Work on common academic collocations and check spelling and word forms; for example, use “raise curiosity,” “play a vital role,” and “protect wildlife.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a concession in the opening (“While some people believe…”) and a reason clause beginning “because.” Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “Being present at zoo” needs an article, while “build curiosity” and “animals exists” show problems with verb form or agreement; “it gives them” also shifts awkwardly from the plural subject “zoos.” In “when schools trips visit,” the noun phrase needs a plural form, and “there are only few numbers alive” has an inaccurate construction. Review articles, subject–verb agreement, plural forms, and sentence boundaries. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen control without sacrificing the range you already attempt.
