IELTS Writing Task 2 question

We no longer need to have animals kept in zoos, so zoos should be closed.

Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is believed that zoos are no longer necessary and should be closed. However, I disagree with the statement because zoos provide medical care for wild animals, help protect endangered species from extinction and generates income for government.

On the one hand, zoos are necessary for providing medical support for animals. Many animals have been disappeared due to lack of medical treatment and irregular check up. Having zoos can be beneficial for injured or sick animals and endangered species. For instance, veterinary doctors in zoos can treat injured tigers and provide regular health check ups to monitor their condition. As a result, these animals feel safe and have a better chance of recovering.

On the other hand, to protect endangered animals the zoo is necessary. Zoos can help to protect animals from poachers and educate students about different animals. For example, elephants need to be protected from poachers who consumes ivory from elephants, where by poaching the population of elephants will be decreased. Furthermore, it will be an advantage for government for having a zoo. It will attract many children and to learn about the different species of animals .It will generate more income through tourism, where the revenue is collect in the form of tickets, food for visitors and other facilities.

In conclusion, I completely disagree that zoos should be closed and no longer needed because zoos will provide medical support for many animals and protect them from hunting. It is also beneficial for government to generate revenue in the name of tourism.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you disagree with closing zoos. You address the question with relevant reasons, including veterinary care, protection from poachers, education, and tourism revenue, and the tiger and elephant examples help support your points. This gives the response a clear, relevant argument. Some claims, however, are broad or not fully explained: the statement that many animals disappear because of inadequate medical treatment needs clarification, and the tourism point could explain more directly why income justifies keeping zoos open. Develop each main reason with a clearer explanation of its impact, rather than adding several claims briefly, to make the support more consistently convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting reasons, and a conclusion that restates your position. The progression from animal care to conservation and then tourism is understandable, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “Furthermore” help guide the reader. Some linking is mechanical, though, and the second body paragraph combines protection, education, and government income without clearly separating how these points relate. The phrase “where by poaching” also makes the connection between cause and effect difficult to follow. Use transitions that express the precise relationship between ideas, and consider giving each distinct reason its own focused development.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “endangered species,” “veterinary doctors,” “poachers,” “ivory,” and “tourism.” These terms make the subject clear, and the response communicates its main ideas. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive: “medical support” is less natural than “veterinary care,” “irregular check up” is unclear, and “the revenue is collect” uses an incorrect word form. Repeated use of “animals,” “protect,” and “generate income” also limits flexibility. Aim for more precise collocations and vary key terms where appropriate, while checking that the chosen word fits the intended meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “because,” “who,” and “where,” and the overall meaning is generally understandable. However, errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction remain noticeable. For example, “zoos … generates income” should have a plural verb, while “Many animals have been disappeared” uses an incorrect passive form. In “elephants need to be protected from poachers who consumes ivory,” the verb does not agree with “poachers”; the final clause beginning “where by poaching” is also structurally unclear. Build accuracy by checking subject–verb agreement and verb patterns, and revise complex sentences to ensure each clause has a clear grammatical structure.
