IELTS Writing Task 2 question
We no longer need to have animals kept in zoos, so zoos should be closed.
Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 4.0)
It is often argued that some people beleive that zoos are no longer so therfore should be closed.I compeletely disagree this view because zoos can help to protect endangered animals and help to learn more about wildlife.
One important reason why zoos should remain open is that they can help to protect endangered animals.some animals are at risk of extinction beacuse of hunting and loss of their nautral habitats. zoos can provide these animals with proper care and can help increase their numbers through breeding programmes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
Your position is clear: “I completely disagree,” and you give one relevant reason, explaining that zoos may protect endangered animals through care and breeding programmes. However, the response addresses the task only minimally because this single point is not developed with a specific example or further explanation, and the second idea in the introduction—learning more about wildlife—is not discussed. The required minimum of 250 words is not met; at 86 words, the response is substantially short, which leaves the argument incomplete. To strengthen your answer, explain how conservation programmes work, add a relevant example, and develop another reason before concluding.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic overall shape: an opening states your view, followed by a paragraph giving a reason. The phrase “One important reason” also signals the move into your supporting point. However, the progression stops after this one brief paragraph, and the idea about learning more about wildlife is introduced but not carried forward. The opening and supporting paragraph are joined without a space or clear paragraph break, which makes the organisation harder to follow. Develop a separate paragraph for each main reason, use linking phrases to show how evidence supports each point, and add a conclusion that restates your position.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “endangered animals,” “extinction,” “habitats,” and “breeding programmes,” so the main conservation point is understandable. However, the range is narrow and several spelling errors reduce accuracy: “beleive,” “compeletely,” “beacuse,” and “nautral.” Some phrasing is also imprecise or repetitive, particularly “help to protect” and “help to learn more.” Aim for accurate spelling and more specific expressions, such as describing how zoos “support conservation” or “contribute to captive-breeding efforts.” Expanding the response would also give you more opportunity to demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary relevant to education, animal welfare, and conservation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You communicate a clear opinion using a straightforward sentence pattern, and the sentence beginning “because zoos can help…” gives a reason for your position. The response also attempts a longer sentence to explain the threat to animals. However, the range of structures is limited, with most ideas expressed in simple statements, and punctuation and sentence boundaries are not consistently controlled. For example, “closed.I” needs a space and a clear sentence boundary, while “animals.some” should begin a new sentence with a capital letter. Practise combining ideas accurately with clauses such as “because,” “although,” and “which,” and check capitalisation and punctuation when editing.
