Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often claimed that we should close zoos because we do not need to keep the wild animals in zoos. I completely disagree with this statement because zoos are the safest place for endangered species and zoos are a source of public education.

Wildlife parks are the places where wild animals can survive for years. Many wild animal species are going to be endangered due illegal poaching by hunters and of conservation threats. For example, in Pakistan, blackbucks, which are antilope species were decling by hunting. Its conservation were carried by Deer Foundation International Pakistan and donated blackbucks to the zoos which are present in the country. Now, their population has been increased by captive breeding in zoos which was impossible if they were not kept in zoos.

Zoos are a visual source of learning for the individuals. Many school trips of children carried by teachers come in zoos for learning. Students who see the animals have an excellent understanding of the species. For example, if a student who just reads and listens about zoo animals, he might not have a good picture of wild animals in his mind compared to that student who visualize the animals in zoo. Therefore, such places are a great place for education and they should not be closed.

In conclusion, I disagree with the view of closing zoos because the population of endangered species would be in threat of poachers and the public would not be able to get education from such a visual learning place.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you disagree with closing zoos, and you give two relevant reasons—protection of endangered species and public education. The blackbuck example provides specific support for the conservation argument, while the school-trip example explains how seeing animals can aid learning. This addresses the task and develops the main ideas, although the education point is less fully extended than the conservation example. To strengthen the response further, explain more precisely how zoos contribute to conservation beyond captive breeding, and develop the educational benefit with a concrete outcome or example. The claim that animals would be threatened by poachers if zoos closed could also be qualified rather than presented as applying to all endangered species.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear, effective structure: an introduction states your view, each body paragraph develops one reason, and the conclusion restates your position. The progression from conservation to education is logical, and signposting such as “For example,” “Therefore,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the argument. The examples are placed in the relevant paragraphs and generally support the topic sentences. To make the flow more flexible, avoid relying so heavily on explicit transitions and connect some ideas through clearer referencing. For instance, “such places” in the education paragraph refers to zoos, but a more precise reference could make the link unmistakable. The conclusion also repeats the two reasons quite closely; synthesising their importance would create a stronger sense of progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “endangered species,” “poaching,” “conservation,” “captive breeding,” and “visual source of learning.” These choices make the subject clear and show attempts to use more specific language than basic everyday terms. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “conservation threats,” “an excellent understanding of the species,” and “a great place for education.” There are also spelling errors in “antilope” and “decling,” and “population has been increased” is not the natural expression for this meaning. Aim to learn vocabulary in common word partnerships and check spelling and word forms. More precise phrasing would make the argument sound more natural without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a relative clause in “blackbucks, which are…” and conditional comparisons in the education paragraph. The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make sentences difficult to follow. Examples include “Many school trips … carried by teachers come in zoos,” where the clause structure and verb forms are unclear, and “Its conservation were carried,” which has agreement and passive-form problems. In “if they were not kept in zoos,” the conditional is understandable, but the surrounding sentence needs clearer construction. Review subject–verb agreement, articles, and passive forms, and practise building complex sentences around one clear main clause. More accurate control of these patterns would improve readability.
