Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many people argue that zoos are no longer need to use as we do not have to keep animals in it, so zoos should be closed. I partially agree with this perspective because although zoos keep animals captivated, it also helps to save the number of endangered species.

On the one hand, there are several reasons why people believe we no longer need to have animals kept in zoos. Animals should have the freedom to live freely. It is injustice to keep them in a cage only for our entertainment. For instance, if animals grow in a cage, they gradually lost their hunting ability. Furthermore, many zoo authority do not give proper attention towards the animals. They do not give them meal at the right time as well as do not take care of their health. As a result, the animals have to suffer a lot.

On the other hand, closing zoos is not the ultimate solution. There are also various advantages that zoos could provide us. Firstly, some animals are becoming endangered because of rapid climate change. In this case, zoos play a crucial role in saving many endangered animals by providing them the ideal environment. Secondly, as now there is not enough job compared to the vast amount people, zoos can create employment opportunity for us. For instance, people can do jobs such as cleaning, taking care of animals, and providing security. Moreover, zoos also help in our economic development if we properly maintain our zoos. Zoos boost tourism revenue by attracting both local and international tourists who spend money on tickets, accomodation, and transport.

In conclusion, although there is some viable reasons to not keep animals in zoos, however, I believe that if maintain zoos properly there is no need to to close zoos as it provides valuable benefits such as employment and boosting tourism revenue.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you partially agree, and the conclusion explains that zoos should remain if properly maintained. You address both sides of the question with relevant reasons, including animal welfare, conservation, employment and tourism. The conservation point is particularly relevant, but some ideas are less fully developed than others: for example, the claim that zoos provide an “ideal environment” for endangered animals would be stronger with a specific example or explanation of how this helps species survive. The employment and tourism points are also listed more than explored. The response therefore covers the task and shows some development, while fuller support and a more direct focus on whether zoos should close would strengthen it further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall progression: an introduction states your position, two body paragraphs present opposing arguments, and a conclusion restates your view. The signposts “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow this structure, and examples are placed alongside the relevant points. To make the flow more natural, reduce formulaic transitions and connect some ideas more explicitly. In the final sentence, “although … however” uses two contrast markers together, which makes the relationship less smooth. The shift from conservation to employment and tourism is understandable, but a clearer link or separate development of these benefits would improve progression. Overall, organisation is clear, with some cohesion that could be more flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “endangered species,” “hunting ability,” “climate change,” “employment opportunity,” and “tourism revenue.” These choices make the main ideas clear, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, several word-choice and collocation errors reduce precision: “animals captivated” does not express the intended idea naturally, “zoo authority” is awkward, and “accomodation” is misspelled. Phrases such as “there is not enough job” and “vast amount people” also show that vocabulary and word forms are not consistently controlled. Communication remains clear, but more accurate collocations and careful spelling would make the language more natural and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including the concession in “although zoos keep animals …” and the conditional “if we properly maintain our zoos.” Meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “zoos are no longer need” has an incorrect verb form, while “many zoo authority” and “it also helps” show problems with number agreement. In “if maintain zoos properly,” the conditional clause is incomplete, and “there is some viable reasons” has a subject–verb agreement error. The final sentence also repeats “to” and combines “although” with “however.” Work on complete clause structures, agreement, and sentence editing while continuing to use complex forms.
