Student answer (Band 5.5)

Animals should no longer kept in zoos, so zoos should be closed. Although that zoos are expenses because of the money we pay before gaining access to it and the noise pollution it can cause to the enviroments, how ever i total disagree with the notion that zoos should be closed because we no longer need animals kept there because zoos provides employment opportunities to the people and also because we no longer have big forests where we can see wild animals again.

Another reason why zoos should remain open is because it provides revenue to state/ country. For example, zoos contributed to finace growth of a country through paying their monthly or annual taxes to the government. Furthermore, zoos also a form of entertainment and sight seeing, for instance, many family always took their families to zoos for sight seeing most especial children.

Furthermore, its is use for educational purpose, many schools/ departments most of the time direct their students to go to zoos for their practicals. for example, about 2 years ago, department of Animal Husbandary send their final year student to a zoo here in Awka to carry out their experiments. On the other hand, Some clubs like jet clubs and press club sometime go to excursion in zoos. I can remeber about 2013 when we went to a one particular zoo in Onitsha, Anambra state.

In conclusion, despite that zoos can be hectic and a bit expenses at time but i strongly disagree that zoos should be closed because in the world today we hardly see a thick forest where we can see most of the wild animals, so it serves as educational purpose.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you disagree with closing zoos, and you give relevant reasons involving employment, revenue, entertainment and education. The examples about students visiting a zoo in Awka and your excursion to Onitsha help make the educational point concrete. This addresses the task, but some ideas are less fully developed than others. For instance, employment is mentioned in the introduction but not explained in the body, while the claim that zoos generate revenue through taxes would be stronger with a clearer explanation of how this supports keeping them open. The point about forests is repeated in the conclusion rather than developed as a separate argument. Explain the significance of each reason and connect it directly to your position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable overall structure, with an introduction, supporting paragraphs and a conclusion. Paragraphs generally group related ideas, and signposts such as “Furthermore” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the main direction. However, progression is sometimes mechanical, with “Furthermore” repeated, and some connections between ideas are unclear. The opening sentence about zoos being expensive and causing noise is not clearly linked to the reasons for opposing closure. In the education paragraph, the school example and the club excursion are placed together without explaining how the second supports the argument. Use clearer topic sentences, vary linking expressions, and make the relationship between each example and its main point explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “employment opportunities,” “revenue,” “educational purpose” and “practicals,” and your examples communicate the intended subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, which sometimes makes the meaning less natural. Phrases such as “finace growth,” “sight seeing,” and “hectic” do not express the intended ideas precisely; “expenses” is also used where an adjective is needed. Spelling errors such as “enviroments,” “remeber” and “Husbandary” further affect accuracy. Build a more precise set of topic vocabulary and check spelling and common word partnerships before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a concession in “Although…” and a contrast introduced by “On the other hand.” This shows some range, but control is inconsistent, especially in longer sentences. Examples include “Animals should no longer kept” (missing a passive verb form), “zoos provides” (subject–verb agreement), and “many family always took their families” (number and tense consistency). The opening sentence beginning “Although that…” is also structurally incomplete, and several sentences need clearer punctuation and sentence boundaries. Practise forming accurate passive constructions and checking agreement, articles and tense. Shorter, well-controlled sentences can help you express the same ideas more clearly while you develop complex structures.
