Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is said that zoos are not useful anymore, as a result, they ought to be closed. I strongly agree with this suggestion. There are 2 main reasons why I suggest closing them.

Firstly, animals cannot be used as people's pleasure and live in dirty and inappropriate housings. Zoos are designed to make people enjoy by seeing various kinds of creatures. However, human beings can't be cruel that animals suffer from pleasing them. Instead of living in the wild nature, animals are being transported and placed to any zoo where most of them have to live in small cages and hences. It is unfair to put them in prisonlike places to make money. Zoo owners do no use enough money to take care of the animals. It is obvious from the way how the animals in zoos look and live.

Secondly, animals should be living in their own habitats by the nature law. By breaking it and torturing animals in zoos will bring adverse effects to the natural balance. Predators and preys help to keep balance of the planet. Climate and geographical location play an important role in animals' survivals. Transfering them into any country also causes fatal issues to the animals. For instance, there might be animals which cannot survive in subtropical or extremely cold countries. As a consequence, they must be kept inside buildings all the time. Despite being warm inside, the air can affect their health harmly.

In conclusion, humans stop torturing animals to make money and please themselves. Living in different places can cause several health issues to the animals. As a result, zoos need to be closed step by step.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction (“I strongly agree”) and remains consistent in the conclusion. You give two relevant reasons: poor conditions and the harm caused by removing animals from their habitats. The examples about small cages and animals struggling in unsuitable climates help explain your view. This meets the task well, but the support is uneven: the claim that zoo owners do not spend enough on care is asserted rather than illustrated, and the link between zoos and disruption to the planet’s natural balance needs clearer explanation. To strengthen the response, develop each reason with a specific example and explain more directly why it supports closing zoos rather than improving their standards.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs signalled by “Firstly” and “Secondly,” and a conclusion. The main ideas are generally easy to follow, and examples are placed alongside the points they support. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. For instance, “By breaking it and torturing animals in zoos will bring adverse effects” does not clearly show how the ideas relate, while the shift from animal welfare to “the natural balance” could be better explained. The conclusion also repeats the main claims rather than drawing them together. Use clearer links between cause and effect, and make references such as “it” unambiguous to improve the progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “habitats,” “predators and preys,” “natural balance,” and “geographical location,” which helps communicate the subject. There are also attempts at more forceful language, such as “prisonlike places” and “fatal issues.” However, inaccurate word forms, spelling, and collocations are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning less natural: “housings,” “hences,” “survivals,” “Transfering,” and “health harmly.” Phrases such as “animals cannot be used as people’s pleasure” and “make people enjoy” also show limited control of natural expression. Build accuracy by learning common word partnerships for animal welfare and environmental effects, and check spelling and word forms during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “as a result,” “However,” and “For instance.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. For example, “animals cannot be used as people’s pleasure and live” does not maintain a clear grammatical structure, and “By breaking it and torturing animals in zoos will bring” has an incorrect clause construction. There are also errors in articles, agreement, and sentence formation, as in “the air can affect their health harmly” and “Zoo owners do no use.” Practise building complex sentences with a clear subject and verb, then check agreement and verb forms. More accurate control would make your reasoning easier to follow.
