Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some people believe we should no longer keep animals in zoos and that is why the right thing to do is to close them. I completely agree with this statement and I fully support the idea.

First of all, animals and wildlife in general should live in their natural habitat and be free. By putting them in cages, we take them from what they are used to. This can lead to sadness, deppression and even agression. Animals who live isolated from their population tend to become lazy and forget their natural habits. In my opinion this whole process of destroying an animal's life should even be considered as a crime. Because of all this, zoos should be closed and wildlife should be returned where it belongs. That way, we are helping the animals and we can turn zoos to veterinarian clinics, for example, which can have even more benefits.

Other people dissagree with this statement. They believe we shouldn't close these animal parks. I understand where this might be coming from. The animals in zoos are often exotic for us and many people don't have the oppurtunity to travel and see them in their natural habitats. That is way they like going to these places to see what they can't anywhere else. However, I believe it is always better to just look up a picture or a video on the Internet, rather than destroying a creature's life.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that we no longer need to put animals in zoos and that is why we should close them. By doing that, we save the animals and can do many more things with the places that were ones zoos.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you strongly support closing zoos. You address both your own view and the opposing argument that zoos let people see exotic animals, then explain why you consider online images preferable. The main reasons—animals’ freedom and the possibility of reusing zoo sites as veterinary clinics—are relevant. However, some points are asserted more than developed. For example, you say isolation makes animals “lazy” and causes them to “forget their natural habits,” but provide no explanation or example to support these claims. The proposal to turn zoos into clinics is also introduced briefly without showing how it would work. More specific evidence and fuller development of these ideas would make the argument more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your position, the first body paragraph gives reasons for it, the second considers an opposing view, and the conclusion restates your stance. The progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “First of all,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help readers understand the argument. Paragraphing is appropriate. To make the organisation more polished, connect some claims more explicitly: the move from animals’ distress to converting zoos into veterinary clinics is abrupt, and “Because of all this” refers broadly to several preceding points. You could also vary the repeated references to “zoos” and “animals” and use clearer links between each reason and the conclusion it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to express your position and discuss animal welfare, including “natural habitat,” “isolated,” “exotic,” and “veterinarian clinics.” These choices make the topic clear, and you attempt some less common terms. However, several spelling errors—“deppression,” “agression,” “dissagree,” and “oppurtunity”—reduce accuracy. Some expressions are also imprecise or awkward, such as “the right thing to do,” “destroying a creature’s life,” and “turn zoos to veterinarian clinics.” Aim for more precise, natural collocations and check spelling carefully. Greater variety in how you refer to animals and their welfare would also help avoid repetition while keeping the argument clear.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and most of your meaning remains clear. For instance, “The animals in zoos are often exotic for us and many people don’t have the opportunity to travel…” combines related ideas, while “By putting them in cages, we take them from what they are used to” uses a subordinate clause effectively. Some grammatical issues remain. “Because of all this, zoos should be closed…” is a sentence fragment when separated from the preceding sentence; attach it to that sentence or recast it as a complete clause. In “we can turn zoos to veterinarian clinics,” the verb pattern is not correctly formed. Review sentence boundaries and verb patterns, and continue using complex structures while checking that each sentence is complete.
