Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

You identify the table’s subject and give a broad overview by noting that households with dependent children had the highest share. However, the response reports only a small part of the data and does not summarise changes across the full period. For example, it gives figures for 1971 but no later-year comparisons, so the major decline in dependent-child households from 52% to 36% and the rises in one-person and lone-parent households are omitted. The overview also incorrectly calls lone-parent households the lowest category throughout; in 1971, one-person households were 6%, compared with 4% for lone parents, but the ranking changes later. The response is also well below the required 150 words. Include an accurate overview and compare key trends across the years.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening sentence, an overview beginning with “Overall,” and a paragraph about 1971. This gives the reader some sense of the intended structure. However, the response stops after describing one year, so there is no progression through the remaining dates or a concluding comparison. Linking is limited, and “whereas” does not clearly connect the comparison that follows. The overview and detail paragraph also repeat the focus on the highest and lowest categories without developing a clear sequence. Organise the body by grouping the main trends—for example, declining dependent-child households and rising one-person and lone-parent households—and use clear links between those comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses a few relevant terms, including “percentage,” “household,” “dependent,” and “lone parent,” showing some awareness of the table’s subject. However, vocabulary is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, which makes parts of the meaning difficult to follow. “Cost types” and “expenditure” do not describe household categories or their proportions, while “the ratio is” is incomplete and unclear. There are also repeated spelling errors, such as “childeren,” “childerens,” and “Britian.” Use precise table language such as “proportion,” “share,” and “household type,” and check spelling carefully. Avoid describing percentages as expenditure unless the data actually concerns spending.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt more than isolated phrases, using an overview sentence and a comparison with “whereas,” but the range of sentence structures is narrow and errors frequently affect clarity. For example, “between 1971 to 2007” uses an incorrect preposition pattern, and “childerens that have dependent on their parents highest household” lacks a clear grammatical structure and a main verb. The sentence beginning “Overall” also has faulty punctuation and sentence boundaries: “highest. followed by couple…” should be joined and correctly punctuated. Subject–verb agreement and articles are inconsistent in phrases such as “lone parent is the lowest.” Practise complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use past-tense forms consistently when describing the historical figures.
