PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY
Student answer (Band 6.5)
There are several household types living across the world and there have been significant changes in them over the years. Today we'll be discussing the change in trends of household types in Great Britain from 1971 to 2007. Overall this time period saw a very major decline in families with dependent children while the number of lone parents and one person household almost doubled. This clearly shows us that the trend in Great Britain has started shifting from larger families to smaller families. the percentage of lone parents has almost tripled while the percentage of dependent children has decreased from 52% to 36%. This shows us that people have started becoming more independent and living in their separate households leaving behind an increasing number in lone parents. Even couples with no children have slightly increased in percentage which shows us that people are more focused on themselves now and less focused on planning children. The number of non dependent children has almost remained constant over all these years with slight changes in between.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response provides a clear overview and identifies key trends, such as the decline in families with dependent children and the rise in lone-parent households. However, the analysis is somewhat limited by the inclusion of subjective commentary, such as 'people have started becoming more independent' and 'people are more focused on themselves now'. These interpretations are not supported by the data provided in the table and detract from the objective tone required for an Academic Task 1 report. To improve, focus strictly on reporting the data trends rather than speculating on social motivations. The main features are identified, but the lack of a more structured comparison between all categories prevents a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is organised into a single block of text, which makes it difficult to follow. A clear structure with separate paragraphs for the introduction, overview, and specific data details is essential for a higher band. While there is a logical progression of ideas, the lack of paragraphing and limited use of cohesive devices (e.g., 'furthermore', 'in contrast', 'conversely') makes the flow feel somewhat mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, but the overall arrangement would benefit significantly from better paragraph breaks to separate the overview from the supporting data points.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey the main trends effectively. There is some repetition of phrases like 'shows us that' and 'percentage of'. While the range is sufficient to communicate the information, it lacks the sophistication and precision expected at higher levels. For instance, instead of 'very major decline', more precise academic collocations like 'a significant downward trend' or 'a marked decrease' would be more appropriate. The word choice is generally accurate, but there is little evidence of less common lexical items or idiomatic control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as the lack of capitalisation at the start of sentences ('the percentage of...') and minor issues with subject-verb agreement or article usage. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The sentence structure is generally functional, but the range of complex structures is limited. Improving punctuation and ensuring consistent sentence starters would enhance the overall quality of the writing.
