Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given table represents the percentages of two categories of household types and different family types living in them from 1971 till 2007.

Overall, there are two types of households, single person and family households. Percentage of single person rose steadily over the years while for family households, which is further divided into two sub categories, i.e. Couple and Lone parents. Lone parents and couples with no children showed a increasing trend while couple with dependent and non-dependent children showed a decreasing trend.

One person, household type, rose from 6 to 12 percent from 1971 to 2001 and plateaued at it till 2007. In one-family household, Couples with no children climbed from 19 to 25 over a period of 1971 to 2001 and plateaued till 2007, similarly lone parents showed similar trend from 4 to 12 from 1971 to 2001 and plateaued till 2007. Couples with dependent children showed downward trend, dropped from 25 to 36 over the period and couples with non-dependent children fluctuated between 10 and 9 over given period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all categories, including single-person households and the various family types. However, there is a significant factual error in your analysis of the 'Couples with dependent children' category; you stated it 'dropped from 25 to 36', which is mathematically impossible and contradicts the data provided. Accuracy in reporting figures is crucial for Task 1. To improve, ensure you double-check the data points against the table before writing. Despite this, the overall structure and selection of key features are appropriate for an IELTS Academic Task 1 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Overall' and 'similarly', to link ideas. However, the progression of ideas within the final paragraph is slightly mechanical. The transition between the different family types could be smoother to improve the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider range of cohesive devices to connect sentences more naturally rather than relying on simple listing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'plateaued', 'fluctuated', and 'downward trend'. These are appropriate for describing statistical data. However, there are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'an increasing trend' (should be 'an upward trend') and the repetitive use of 'showed a... trend'. To improve, try to vary your verbs and nouns when describing changes. For example, instead of repeating 'showed', you could use 'experienced', 'witnessed', or 'underwent'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('One person, household type' should be 'The one-person household type') and punctuation issues. Additionally, the phrase 'plateaued at it till 2007' is slightly awkward; 'remained stable until 2007' would be more precise. The sentence 'Couples with dependent children showed downward trend' is missing an article. To improve, focus on article usage and ensure subject-verb agreement is consistent throughout your writing.
