Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response effectively identifies the main trends and provides a clear overview. You have selected key data points to support your descriptions, such as the rise in one-person households and the decline in couples with dependent children. The comparison between categories is well-handled. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurately interpreted; for instance, the table shows one-person households at 6% in 1971 and 12% in 2007, which you correctly identified. The overview is concise and captures the essence of the changes. The response is well-structured and covers all parts of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information by household type. You use cohesive devices such as 'Likewise', 'In a stark contrast', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different trends. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Overall, the information is presented in a clear, progressive manner that is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, using terms like 'stark contrast', 'proportion', and 'sub-category'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'within a family based households' (should be 'family-based households') and 'couple without children seemed to be on a rise' (should be 'on the rise'). However, these errors do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations to describe statistical changes, such as 'witnessed a steady decline' or 'accounted for a significant proportion'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'majority of the households' (needs 'the' before majority), 'in every 10 years' (should be 'every 10 years'), and 'couple had dependent' (needs an article or plural form). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the response. The punctuation is generally accurate. To achieve a higher band, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and consistent use of articles, and try to vary your sentence structure further by using more complex subordinate clauses.
