The table chart depicts the changes in percentage of some household types in Great Britain between 1971 and 2007.

The proportions for one person household and lone parent stood at 6% and 4% respectively in 1971, for both which increased gradually to 12 % in 2007. The non-dependent children household type accounted for 10% in 1971, and showed slight changes but mostly remained constant throughout the period.

The dependent household type was the most prevalent type with the highest percentage of 52% in 1971, and even after decreasing gradually, it remained the highest until 2007 with 36%. The no children families were 19% of the total in 1971, and even after a gradual rise remained the second highest proportion of the total with 25% of the total in 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively covers the main features of the data. You have identified the key trends, such as the decline in dependent children households and the growth in one-person and lone-parent households. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the overall patterns. You have made relevant comparisons, such as noting the relative stability of non-dependent children households. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurate; for instance, you mentioned one-person and lone-parent households both reached 12% in 2007, but the data shows one-person households at 12% and lone-parent at 6%. Precision in reporting figures is essential for Task 1.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information by household type. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'however', 'whereas', and 'in contrast' to link your points effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different categories of data. The flow between sentences is generally smooth, and referencing is clear throughout the text. To improve further, ensure that the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is slightly more seamless to enhance the overall cohesion of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly. Phrases like 'witnessed a steady increase', 'remained relatively stable', and 'most prevalent type' are well-chosen and appropriate for an academic report. There is some repetition of the word 'type' and 'total', which could be avoided by using synonyms or restructuring sentences. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise academic collocations or varied descriptors for trends would elevate the lexical quality. The spelling is accurate throughout the response, and the terminology used to describe the data is generally precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You have successfully employed comparative structures and subordinate clauses. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar does not impede communication. There are minor issues, such as 'for both which increased', which is slightly awkward phrasing, and some minor punctuation errors regarding spacing around percentages. However, your control over tense and subject-verb agreement is generally strong. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice or participle clauses, to demonstrate greater flexibility in your writing.
