PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The following summary illustrates the change in household types in great Britain from 1971 to 2007.
The first category is one person household type, the number starts at 6 in 1971 and sees a gradual increase across the years till 2007 by ending on 12 the same as 2007, this shows a rise in single person households.
For couples, the couples with no children start at 19 in 1971 and similar to one person households, the number gradually increases to 25 in 2007. However the usual pattern is defied by dependent children couples and non dependent children which both start with a high percentage but end lower with 25% and 36% . Lone parent families start at 4% in 1971 and see a increase to 12%.
In conclusion there has been a rise in single person and no children households which shows people don't always prefer to live with a partner or family in present times however there is a decrease gradually in dependent and non dependent children which reverses the trend.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the data, such as the increase in single-person households and the decline in family-based households. However, the reporting of data is inconsistent; for instance, the student mentions '6' and '12' without specifying that these represent millions, and the percentages for 'dependent children' and 'non-dependent children' are mentioned without clear reference to the source data. The overview is present but lacks a clear synthesis of the overall trends. To improve, ensure all data points are clearly labeled with units and focus on comparing the categories more effectively rather than listing them individually.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body, and conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'The first category is' and 'For couples' are used to transition, but the flow between sentences could be smoother. The conclusion attempts to summarize the trends but introduces a subjective interpretation ('people don't always prefer to live with a partner') which is not strictly supported by the data provided. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, unified focus would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for higher bands. The student relies on basic descriptors such as 'increase' and 'high percentage'. There are also some awkward phrasings, such as 'the usual pattern is defied', which is not the most natural way to describe statistical trends. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more varied and precise vocabulary related to data description, such as 'upward trend', 'significant decline', or 'fluctuation', and ensure that terms are used in their correct collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the number starts at 6... by ending on 12' and 'see a increase'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly regarding the use of commas and capitalization (e.g., 'great Britain'). The student attempts complex sentences, but these often contain errors that slightly impede the flow. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
