Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the data and makes relevant comparisons. You successfully identified the downward trend for couples with children and the upward trends for one-person and lone-parent households. However, the report is slightly unbalanced; the final paragraph mentions a 'major dramatic increase' from 19% to 25% without clearly identifying which category this refers to, which creates confusion. Additionally, the introductory sentence incorrectly labels the data as 'pastimes' rather than household types, which is a significant misinterpretation of the task prompt. To improve, ensure all data points are clearly linked to their respective categories and double-check the labels provided in the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for trends, and a brief summary. Cohesive devices such as 'meanwhile', 'similarly', and 'furthermore' are used to link ideas effectively. However, the referencing in the final body paragraph is unclear; the transition to the 19% to 25% figure lacks a subject, making it difficult for the reader to follow the progression of the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and there is a clear overall progression of information from the general overview to specific details.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'accounted for', 'gradually', and 'significantly'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, most notably the use of 'pastimes' in the introduction, which is incorrect in this context. There are also minor errors in capitalization, such as 'great Britain' instead of 'Great Britain'. While you attempt to use some descriptive language, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise terminology related to data trends and ensure proper nouns are capitalized correctly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'figure gradually increase' (should be 'increased') and 'reduced by only a percent' (should be 'a percentage point'). Additionally, 'the table demonstrate' should be 'the table demonstrates'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the overall communication of the data. You have a basic grasp of tense usage, but more attention to subject-verb agreement and consistent past tense for reporting historical data would improve the accuracy of your writing.
