IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the change in some household types in Great Britain from 1971 to 2007.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY

PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The data presented shows how the type of households have change in Great Britain from 1971 to 2007.

Overall, the main data illustrate that one-person households have been increasing throughout the years, while couples with no children have declined consistently.

For 1971 only six percent of houses were occupied by one person, while in 2007, more than thirty years later, this percentage was doubled to twelve percent. This similar behaviour was detected related to households with a single parent, skyrocketing from four to twelve percent, almost triple the amount in this period of time.

Another relevant data to report, is that couples used to have more dependent children in 1971 than in 2007, decreasing from fifty-two to thrirty-six percent. On the other hand, households that have couples with non-dependant children have been quite steady over time, with ten percent in 1971 and in the following decade, then increasing just one point in 1991 to finally stabilise from 2001 at nine percent.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers the main features of the data well, identifying key trends such as the increase in one-person households and the decline in couples with dependent children. You have successfully selected and reported the most significant changes. However, the analysis could be improved by ensuring all data points are accurate; for instance, you stated that one-person households doubled from 6% to 12%, but the data shows an increase from 14% to 29%. Additionally, the comparison of 'couples with non-dependent children' is slightly confusing in its phrasing. Overall, the report is clear and addresses the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by household type. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'For 1971', and 'On the other hand' helps guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different trends. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between sentences is smoother and avoid repetitive structures. The logical progression is generally sound, though some of the data interpretation lacks the precision needed for a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the trends, using terms like 'skyrocketing', 'stabilise', and 'consistently'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'main data illustrate' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'this similar behaviour was detected' (which is a bit wordy). You also have a spelling error ('thrirty-six'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise academic collocations would enhance the quality of your writing. The range is sufficient to communicate the information clearly without significant difficulty for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'how the type of households have change' (should be 'have changed') and 'Another relevant data to report, is that' (incorrect comma usage and subject-verb agreement). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the text. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage when describing historical data. The errors present do not impede communication, but they do prevent the response from reaching the higher bands where error-free sentences are more frequent.
