Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main features of the data and provided a clear overview. You included relevant figures to support your points, which is essential for a Task 1 response. However, the overview is slightly weak; it focuses on a specific comparison rather than summarizing the most significant trends across the entire period. Additionally, some of your descriptions of the data are a bit mechanical, simply listing numbers rather than synthesizing the information to highlight the most important changes. To improve, try to group the data more effectively and focus on the overall trends (e.g., the decline in dependent children vs. the rise in one-person households) rather than just reporting the figures year by year.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices like 'Whereas', 'Next', and 'Lastly' to transition between ideas. However, some of these transitions feel a bit forced or mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is abrupt. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear focus will help improve the overall flow and logical progression of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and variety needed for a higher band score. You rely heavily on basic verbs like 'had', 'was', and 'increased'. Phrases like 'crystal clear' are a bit informal for an Academic Task 1 report. Additionally, there are some awkward collocations, such as 'data has been calibrated into percentage' and 'in the years order'. To improve, try to use more sophisticated vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', or 'experienced a downward trend', and ensure your word choices are appropriate for a formal report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. For instance, 'dependent children varies more percentage' should be 'the percentage of dependent children varied more'. There are also issues with article usage and prepositional phrases, such as 'in between 1971 to 2007' (should be 'between 1971 and 2007') and 'in the years order'. While these errors do not completely obscure your meaning, they are frequent enough to affect the overall clarity of your writing. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
