Student answer (Band 6.5)
The table given displays information about the advancements made to a few household types in Britain over the course of thirty-six years.
Firstly, the information given indicates that there was a gradual increase in the percentage of one-person households, with an estimated increase of about 6%. Following that, the information regarding one-family and couple households remains undisclosed. Therefore, no comments can be made on the changes seen within those sectors.
Moreover, the following sub-group concerning households of no children, the illustration proves an increase in such households, while displaying the simultaneous decrease in households housing dependent children. It is this sector that faces the most palpable changes, with an overall decrease of about 18% between the year range provided. On the contrary, the most stable and consistent statistics are seen in the following subgroup: households consisting of non-dependent children. Little changes are to be noted here, with minimal fluctuations, and a small peak in 1991. Lastly, there are households of lone parents, which see an apparent rise over the years from 4% to just about 12%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to address the task adequately. You have misinterpreted the data provided in the table, specifically claiming that information regarding 'one-family and couple households' is undisclosed, when in fact, these categories are clearly listed in the table. By omitting these major categories, you have failed to report on the main features of the data. Furthermore, the analysis lacks a clear overview, which is essential for Task 1. To improve, ensure you carefully examine all columns and rows in the table and provide a summary that highlights the most significant trends across all categories rather than focusing on isolated sub-groups.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, and there is an attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'On the contrary'. However, the logical progression is hindered by the factual inaccuracies regarding the data. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs feels mechanical. To improve, ensure that your paragraphing reflects a logical grouping of data (e.g., grouping categories that increased versus those that decreased) and use cohesive devices to link comparisons more naturally rather than just listing observations.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'simultaneous', 'fluctuations', and 'palpable'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'advancements made to a few household types', which is not the correct way to describe statistical changes in a table. The phrase 'no comments can be made' is also inappropriate for an academic report. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations for describing data, such as 'a steady rise' or 'a significant decline', and ensure your vocabulary is used in the correct context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'Little changes are to be noted here', which is slightly unnatural, and 'the illustration proves an increase', where 'shows' or 'indicates' would be more appropriate. While these errors do not impede communication, they demonstrate a lack of full control over complex structures. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining your use of passive voice, which is often useful when describing data trends in academic writing.
