PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The graph illustrates the structure of UK households over the period from 1971 to 2007.
Overall, only the percentage of families with dependent children decreased all over the period, while the number of lonely people, couples without children and lonely parents increased. The percentage of families with adult children fluctuated between nine and eleven percent and all figures, except families with young children, stabilized from 2001 to 2007.
The percentage of one person households doubled throughout a period from six to twelve percent of total. The same upward trend regards also couples who live without children - their number grew by six percent from nineteen to twenty five percent in 2001 and remained the same for the next six years. The number of lone mothers and fathers tripled over 36 years from four to twelve percent.
The total number of families with kids dropped from 52 to 36 percent, but it is still the biggest figure among all categories. As regards couples with grown children, it was almost stable throughout the period, slightly falling in the last two periods.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all categories mentioned in the table and made relevant comparisons, such as noting that families with children remained the largest category despite a decline. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurate; for instance, you mentioned the number of lone parents tripled, but the data shows a shift from 4% to 12%, which is indeed a tripling, showing good analytical skills. The summary is well-structured and addresses the prompt effectively by highlighting both the upward and downward trends across the 36-year period.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by trend. You use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'The same upward trend', and 'As regards' to guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion. The progression of ideas is logical, moving from general trends to specific category changes, which makes the report easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'upward trend', 'fluctuated', and 'stabilized' are used accurately in the context of describing data. However, there is some repetition of basic terms like 'number' and 'percentage'. To improve, try to vary your vocabulary by using synonyms or different ways to describe statistical changes, such as 'proportion', 'figure', or 'rate'. The word choice is generally precise, and there are no significant errors that impede communication, though more sophisticated collocations would elevate the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The percentage of one person households doubled throughout a period from six to twelve percent of total.' While there are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'regards also couples' (should be 'applies to couples') and 'throughout a period' (should be 'throughout the period'), these do not impede meaning. Your control of tense is consistent, and punctuation is generally accurate. To achieve a higher band, aim for more varied complex structures and ensure articles and prepositions are used with greater precision.
