IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the change in some household types in Great Britain from 1971 to 2007.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY

PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The provided tabular chart depicts the change in household types from the year 1971 to 2007 in Great Britain. The data is calibrated in percentile.

Overall it is crystal clear that one family households with dependent children is the most dominant household type across all the data years whereas lone parent household type has lowest proportion in first three years of the data.

At a fleeting glance it is evident that one person, one family household with sub division of no children along with non dependent children and lone parent had same figures in 2007 as in 2001 while all of them being under 12%. However, a dip was experienced by the dependent children household under one family household from 52% in 1971 to 36% in 2007.

Moreover, while the type of non dependent under one family household was consistent at 10% in 1971 and 1981, it faced decline and reached 9% in 2007.

Looking at the data it can be concluded that the household types rather than dependent children and non dependent children rose consistently.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response provides a clear overview and identifies key trends, such as the decline in households with dependent children. However, the report lacks precision in data selection. For instance, stating that several categories had the 'same figures' in 2007 as in 2001 is a vague observation that misses the opportunity to provide specific data points. Additionally, the final sentence is confusing and fails to clearly summarise the overall trends for the categories mentioned. To improve, ensure that every trend described is supported by accurate data from the table rather than generalising.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'However', and 'At a fleeting glance' are used to connect ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The overall progression of ideas is logical, but the final paragraph is somewhat abrupt and lacks a strong concluding synthesis of the data provided.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, though there are some inaccuracies in word choice. For example, 'calibrated in percentile' is an unnatural way to describe data presented in percentages. Phrases like 'sub division of no children' are slightly awkward and imprecise. While the student attempts to use a range of vocabulary, the lack of precision in describing statistical changes limits the score. Using more precise terms for trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', or 'experienced a marginal increase', would enhance the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'one family households with dependent children is' (subject-verb agreement) and 'household types rather than dependent children... rose' (incorrect comparative structure). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are missing commas in complex sentences. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of comparative structures will help improve accuracy.
