IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the change in some household types in Great Britain from 1971 to 2007.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The table demonstrates the percentages of different types of household and family in Great Britain every decade from 1971 to 2001, and year 2007. Overall, one person and lone parent were the least categories, while couple was most significant over the period of time.
The percentage of one person indicated a double number from 6% in 1971 to 12% in 2001, and plateaued until year 2007. Similarly, lone parent illustrated triple rise from 4% in 1971 to 12% in 2001, while the percentage remained the same in 2007.
Regarding the one-family households, couples who had no children experienced an increase from 19% in 1971 to 25% in 2001, then remained stable in 2007. On the contrary, couples who had dependent children faced a downward trend from 52% in 1971 to 36% in 207. Looking into the couples who had non-dependent children, the percentage fluctuated over the period from 9% to 11%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the data and makes relevant comparisons. You have identified the key trends for the different household types. However, the overview is slightly inaccurate; you state that 'one person and lone parent were the least categories', but the data shows that 'lone parent' and 'couples with non-dependent children' were often lower in the early years. Additionally, the overview could be more comprehensive by highlighting the most significant shift, which is the decline of couples with dependent children. While you have addressed the task, the analysis of the data is somewhat basic and lacks a more sophisticated synthesis of the trends.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, with an introduction, a clear overview, and body paragraphs focusing on specific categories. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Similarly', 'Regarding', and 'On the contrary' to link ideas. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes mechanical. For instance, the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, but the structure of the sentences within the paragraphs could be improved to ensure a better flow of information. Overall, the organization is coherent, but the use of cohesive devices is not yet flexible enough for a higher band.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information, such as 'plateaued', 'downward trend', and 'fluctuated'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'double number' is not standard; 'doubled' would be more appropriate. Similarly, 'triple rise' is awkward; 'tripled' or 'a threefold increase' would be better. The phrase 'least categories' is also imprecise. While you attempt to use some less common vocabulary, the errors in collocation and word formation prevent a higher score. Expanding your range of academic collocations will help improve your precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'one person and lone parent were the least categories' (missing noun/pluralization), 'illustrated triple rise' (missing article), and '36% in 207' (likely a typo for 2007). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more error-free sentences and ensure that your complex structures, such as those using 'while' or 'who', are used with greater precision and fewer minor slips.
