PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The table displays information about the change in some household types in Great Britain between 1971 and 2007.
From the broader perspective, it is clear that as time passed, the proportion of single households increased gradually. The same trend was seen for the parents without children. The opposite trend was seen by the parents with dependent children and non-dependent children. A single parent living alone became three times more at the end of the period.
However, a single person staying in a house was at 6% in 1971, but it was increased to the peak at 12% in 2001 and remained stable in 2007. On the other hand, looking at the couples living in a house without any children. In 1971, it was at 19% and increased to 23% in 1991 and touched the mark of 25% in 2007. While, parents having dependent children were at 52% in 1971, it declined considerably throughout the period, reaching at 47% in 1981, falling to 39% in 2001, and fell to a low of 36% in 2007.
In contrast, parents having independent children were at 10% in 1971, which slightly increased to 11% in 1991, but decreased in the following year at 9% and remained stable in 2007. Nevertheless, a single parent living in a home was at 4% in 1971, which reached more than two times in 1991 and reached a top at 12% in 2001 and remained stable the following year.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided relevant data points to support your summary. You covered all categories mentioned in the table and made appropriate comparisons. However, the overview could be more precise; for instance, stating that single households increased 'gradually' is a bit vague given the data. Additionally, there are some inaccuracies in your reporting of the figures, such as stating a single parent household reached 'more than two times' in 1991 when the data shows a more specific progression. To improve, ensure your overview highlights the most significant shifts, such as the decline in couples with dependent children versus the rise in single-person households, rather than just listing trends.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on different household types. You use some cohesive devices like 'However', 'On the other hand', and 'In contrast' to signal shifts in the data. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions between sentences feel slightly abrupt. For example, the transition into the final paragraph ('In contrast...') is not entirely logical as the data discussed there is not strictly contrasting with the previous paragraph. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus will enhance the overall cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly, using terms like 'proportion', 'declined considerably', and 'remained stable'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, saying a household 'became three times more' is unnatural; 'tripled' would be more precise. Similarly, 'reached a top at 12%' is slightly awkward; 'peaked at 12%' is the standard academic phrasing. You rely on some repetitive structures when describing the data points. Expanding your range of reporting verbs and adverbs would help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For instance, 'it was increased to the peak' should be 'it increased to a peak', and 'reaching at 47%' is incorrect as 'reach' does not take a preposition. There are also issues with tense consistency and article usage, such as 'a single person staying in a house was at 6%'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage.
