PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The table displays information about the change in some household types in Great Britain between 1971 and 2007.
From the broader perspective, it is clear that as time passed, the proportion of single households increased slightly. The same trend was seen for the parents without children. The opposite trend was experienced by the parents with dependent children and non-dependent children. A single parent living alone tripled at the end of the period.
However, a single person staying in a house was at 6% in 1971, but it was increased to the peak at 12% in 2001 and remained stable in 2007. On the other hand, looking at the couples living in a house without any children. In 1971, it was at 19% and increased to 23% in 1991 and touched the mark of 25% in 2007. While, parents having dependent children were at 52% in 1971, it declined considerably throughout the period, reaching 47% in 1981, falling to 39% in 2001, and falling to a low of 36% in 2007.
Moreover, parents having independent children were at 10% in 1971, which slightly increased to 11% in 1991, but decreased in the following year at 9% and remained stable in 2007. Nevertheless, a single parent living in a home was at 4% in 1971, which reached 10% in 1991 and peaked at 12% in 2001 and remained stable the following year.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all key features of the data and provides a clear overview. You successfully identified the main trends, such as the decline in households with dependent children and the rise in single-person and single-parent households. The comparisons are generally relevant and supported by data. However, the report could be improved by ensuring the data points are consistently accurate; for instance, you mentioned a 'single parent' tripled, but the data shows a shift from 4% to 12%, which is indeed a tripling, but the phrasing could be more precise. Overall, the response effectively summarizes the main features of the table.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by household type. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'On the other hand', and 'Moreover' are used to guide the reader through the data. While the paragraphing is sufficient, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. For example, the start of the final paragraph ('Nevertheless') is not the most appropriate choice for adding more information. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would elevate the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'declined considerably', and 'remained stable'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'it was increased to the peak' (should be 'it peaked at') and 'touched the mark of' (which is slightly informal). You successfully use vocabulary related to trends, but to reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise collocations and a slightly wider variety of descriptive verbs to avoid repetition of 'increased' and 'decreased'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and passive voice constructions, such as 'it was increased' instead of 'it increased' and 'the opposite trend was experienced by' (which is wordy). Additionally, there are some punctuation and sentence fragment issues, such as 'While, parents having dependent children were at 52% in 1971, it declined...' where the 'While' clause is incorrectly punctuated. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the errors do not impede communication.
