Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table displays information about the change in different types of households in Great Britain between 1971 and 2007.

Overall, it can be seen that as time passed, the proportion of single households increased at a steady rate. The couples without any children became more common. While parents with dependent and independent children decreased considerably. A noticeable feature is that the percentage of a single parent tripled at the end of the period.

Moreover, looking at the figures of single person, which were at 6% in 1971, increased to 8% in 1981 and 11% in 1991, then peaked at 12% in 2001 and 2007, each. Referencing the couples with no children. It started at 19% in 1971, increased by 1% in 1981, reached 23% in 1991 and touched the mark at 25% in 2001 and 2007, respectively.

However, coming at the group of parents with dependent children. In 1971, it was at 52%, which decreased to 47% in 1981 and 41% in 1991. Then it dropped to 39% in 2001, falling to a low of 36% in 2007. On the other hand, parents having independent children started at 10% in 1971, and remained the same the following year, then increased by 1% in 1991, reaching 11% in 1991, but decreased by 2%, concluding at 9% in 2001 and 2007. Nevertheless, a single-parent group was at 4% in 1971, increased to 6% in 1981, 10% in 1991, and peaked at 12% in 2001 and 2007, each.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all categories mentioned in the table and made relevant comparisons, such as noting the tripling of single-parent households. However, the report could be improved by grouping the data more effectively. For instance, instead of listing every single year's data point, you could focus more on the overall trajectory and significant shifts. The inclusion of all data points makes the report feel slightly like a list rather than an analytical summary. Nevertheless, the key features are well-highlighted, and the response meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'However', and 'On the other hand' to transition between ideas. However, some sentences are fragmented or awkwardly linked, such as 'Referencing the couples with no children. It started at...', where the first part is a sentence fragment. Additionally, the use of 'each' at the end of sentences like 'peaked at 12% in 2001 and 2007, each' is slightly unnatural. Improving the flow between sentences would elevate the coherence of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'steady rate', and 'peaked'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'coming at the group' instead of 'turning to the group' or 'regarding the group'. The repetition of 'increased' and 'decreased' is noticeable; using more varied synonyms like 'climbed', 'surged', 'declined', or 'dipped' would enhance the lexical variety. Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the information clearly without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For example, 'looking at the figures of single person... increased' is a dangling modifier, as the figures themselves are not looking at anything. There are also issues with preposition usage and sentence structure, such as 'concluding at 9% in 2001 and 2007'. Despite these errors, the complexity of your sentences is sufficient for a 6.0-6.5 band, as the errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the data.
